Hobsonville takes stock after tornado

Electricity has been restored to most of the homes in the Auckland suburb of Hobsonville that were affected by Thursday's tornado.

Electricity network provider Vector said the final 30 customers would be hooked up to the network today.

Three construction workers were killed in the powerful winds on Thursday and hundreds of homes in Hobsonville and neighbouring Whenuapai were damaged.

Vector said crews worked through Friday night to reconnect electricity to 280 homes.

Inspections of powerlines continued today and work to remove fallen trees also continued.

Up to 100 residents are still being taken care of by Civil Defence in emergency accommodation.

Hobsonville remains cordoned off, but only to keep curious non-residents from coming by for a look.

Residents have been allowed back to their homes to take stock of the damage and contractors have been busy making emergency repairs.

"Today we came with some wood and tarpaulin, we thought we'd probably have to fix (the roof) ourselves," said Karen Bramley.

"But it's great to see this has happened, my partner's a big boy and would probably fall through the roof if he tried to fix it himself."

Matt Trayes, a shrink-wrapper, said his company was working throughout the day and into the night and that pace would probably continue until Christmas.

Meanwhile, locals are raising money for displaced families at the Hobsonville farmer's market this weekend.

Donations are being collected at the site and the local land company has already stumped up $6,000.
