Apple's Share of Ultrabook Market Will Decline

Computerworld's Gregg Keizer reports that although Apple will sell an increasing number of MacBook Airs over the next two years, its share of the light-and-thin notebook market will fall as computer makers crank out Windows-powered competitors, according to analyst Brian Marshall of International Strategy & Investment Group (ISI) in a Dec. 13 note to clients.

Marshall estimates that Apple will sell 6.3 million MacBook Air notebooks in 2011, 8.4 million in 2012 and 10.4 million in 2013, and that MacBook Air sales accounted for 49% of all Apple's notebook sales in the quarter that ended Sept. 30, 2011.

However, he predicts, even as Apple sells more MacBook Airs, its share of the total "ultrabook" market will decline.

Marshall thinks Apple's 2102 ultrabook (notebooks that weigh less than three pounds, use SSD storage, have a full-sized keyboard and at least an 11" screen) share will diminish to approximately 46% in 2012, and to 32% in 2013, with more Windows PC makers jumping on the ultrabook bandwagon.

Marshall projects that no Windows PC maker will beat Apple, but Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo will come closest, with Microsoft's release of Windows 8 next year to help boost non-Apple ultrabooks sales, noting in his research note that "Success hinges on reaching mainstream notebook PC prices close to $700, or 30% below the base 11.6" MacBook Air model at $999."

Marshall anticipates some 30 to 50 ultrabook announcements at the Jan. 10-13 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Publisher's note: This is like predicting that Windows' share of the operating system market, Internet Explorer's share of the browser market, or the iPad's share of the tablet market will decline. When you so completely dominate a market, there's really nowhere for your share to go but down, and since Apple pretty much invented the ultrabook category (the MacBook Air came out before the term ultrabook had even been coined), the conclusion is obvious. It is interesting to see the trajectory being predicted - and remember how none of the 10" Android tablets have yet made a dent in iPad sales. dk

Glitch in Backing Up after Data Restore from Time Machine

MacGroup blogger Chita Hunter notes that there was one item from a laptop drive failure a few weeks ago that didn't end at all as expected, despite having a a full clone backup, an emergency Lion USB thumb drive, and a Time Machine backup.

Once home, the laptop was booted up from the thumb drive, restored from the Time Machine drive, and seemed fine, but running SuperDuper at the end of the day, it was noted that the backup seemed to be taking longer than normal, although it completed, but an attempted Time Machine backup the next day found Time Machine overwriting existing data.

It is deduced that with a new drive ID, even though the info on the new drive was from a Time Machine restore, the drive is still a new different entity to Time Machine, with data on the new drive considered new data.

Something to consider if you're restoring your date to a new drive from Time Machine.

Editor's note: Your editor does Time Machine backups periodically, but depends mainly on Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware). cm

Publisher's note: Your publisher doesn't use Time Machine, but depends on SuperDuper ($28) to create bootable hard drive clones. dk

Sonnet Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter

PR: Thunderbolt technology offers amazing speed (up to 10 Gb/s) and versatility, supporting high-resolution displays plus high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It's next generation I/O technology available today. But what about connecting existing FireWire and eSATA peripherals as well as high speed memory cards?

Sonnet Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt AdapterSonnet's Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter expands Thunderbolt connectivity to support more than just storage systems and monitors, adding an ExpressCard/34 slot to any computer to which it's connected, enabling you to use a wide variety of ExpressCard/34 cards to add a range of interfaces and capabilities to your system.

For example, this adapter lets you add more FireWire ports or an eSATA interface through a single Thunderbolt adapter, allowing you to choose your connections and add more to your setup. Because this adapter supports hot-swapping, you can select and change the ExpressCard to use as needed. It supports most Sonnet ExpressCard/34 cards (with a PCI Express interface), such as their models with FireWire interfaces, CompactFlash and SDXC card readers, and select eSATA controllers. It also will support most specialty bus-interface products like the interface adapter for AJA io Express.

Sonnet Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt AdapterSetup for this Sonnet adapter is simple - just connect it directly to your computer or at the end of a Thunderbolt device chain with a Thunderbolt cable (not included, sold at the Apple Store). That's it. There is no software to install and no power supply to plug in. Plug the ExpressCard/34 card into the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter as you would into a notebook computer's ExpressCard slot, install software for the adapter if necessary, and you're ready to work.

Key Features

  • Expands Your Computer's Connectivity and Capabilities - Enables you to use ExpressCard/34 adapters with Thunderbolt technology-equipped computers
  • Fast Interface - High-performance 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt technology, 2.5 Gb/s ExpressCard/34 interface

Versatile Connectivity via Thunderbolt

Sonnet Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt AdapterSonnet's Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter opens a world of connectivity options to any Thunderbolt technology-enabled computer. ExpressCard/34 adapters, originally intended for use with notebook computers, offer users additional connectivity and functionality beyond what's available through their computers stock configuration. With Sonnet's EchoExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter, you can have an eSATA Thunderbolt adapter, a FireWire 800 Thunderbolt adapter, or an SDXC or CF Thunderbolt adapter. Sonnet says additional options will be available soon.

iBrightness Overrides OS X Auto Brightness, Puts You in Control

PR: XCool Apps has announced iBrightness, their latest app designed for Apple's MacBook line of portable computers. iBrightness is now available on the Mac App Store and is targeted at filling the gap for one of the most basic features that should have been built-in to each MacBook that Apple sells.

Whenever we turn the power adapter on or off, our MacBooks will automatically adjust the screen brightness. However, it switches the brightness according to what it thinks is right, sometimes depending on what it feels like, even when we switched off the automatic brightness setting.

iBrightness

iBrightness

"We work on our Macs the whole day," say the developers, "and we grew tired of our MacBooks constantly forgetting the brightness level that we have set whenever we change power sources, so we came out with the idea for iBrightness."

Besides allowing you to freely adjust your brightness level straight from the menu bar, iBrightness sits in the menu bar, waiting for your Mac's power source to change and then re-adjusts the screen brightness according to what you have previously set. No more guessing if the screen will be too dim when you move away from the power socket, or if it will be too bright because you turned to the power adapter. iBrightness is here to keep the guessing game away.

iBrightness Features

  • Automatically adjust your portable Mac's screen brightness when switching power source
  • Separate brightness levels for each power source: battery or power adapter
  • Adjust screen brightness levels easily from the comfort of your menu bar
  • Option to run app on system startup (recommended)

iBrightness is designed for portable Macs like the MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro running Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard or above. You may run this app on non-portable Macs, but with reduced functionalities.

System Requirements

  • Apple Macintosh computer
  • Designed for MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro
  • Requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later
  • 0.5 MB

iBrightness 1.0 is available at 99? (or its equivalent amount in other currencies) and is available worldwide exclusively through Apple's Mac App Store in the Utilities category.

US denounces Chavez cancer comment (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is denouncing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for questioning whether the U.S. might be behind a rash of cancer cases among Latin American leaders.

The State Department on Thursday said Chavez's comments were "horrific and reprehensible." Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said they were not worthy of further response.

Chavez has long questioned whether the U.S. government could be plotting to oust him. But earlier this week he went far beyond that, saying it was very strange that he and the leaders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay have struggled with cancer.

He said he wasn't accusing the U.S. and doesn't have any proof. But he asked, in his words, "Would it be strange if they had developed a technology to induce cancer and no one knew it?"

Golf cart drivers face new rules if they hit public roads

Taking the golf cart out for a spin around the neighborhood may be fun, but make sure the vehicle is equipped much like the everyday car you're leaving in the garage.

A new law taking effect Sunday creates a separate classification of personal transportation vehicles for golf carts, requiring them to have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints.

The carts must weigh less than 1,375 pounds and not top speeds of 20 mph. The carts must also be registered with the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles.

The new requirements take effect once golf cart drivers hit public roadways, including subdivision streets.

"We will be looking out for and enforcing the law as it is written," said Sgt. Kiley Sargent of the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

If deputies notice carts with missing equipment "on a county right of way or roadway, then (drivers) are subject to being stopped and fined," just like any other vehicle, Sargent said.

The bill was signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal this year after his predecessor, Gov. Sonny Perdue, vetoed a similar measure last year. It had backing from one of Georgia's key industries ? golf cart manufacturing.

The Georgia-based International Light Transportation Vehicle Association, formerly known as the National Golf Cars Manufacturers Association ? which prefers the term "car" to "cart" ? estimates that 90 percent of the golf carts used in the U.S. are made in Georgia.

"Safety is what we're concerned about," said Fred L. Somers Jr., secretary of the association.

"Unless you put in some safety equipment accessories, you're just asking for trouble."

And, he added, golf carts are a cheaper form of transportation for people who live in cities where they don't need to travel far to go to the grocery store.

The new law also sets standards for towns and counties wanting to create ordinances allowing drivers to use the carts on residential streets and multi-purpose pathways.

Twenty-three Georgia cities have golf cart ordinances, with some places such as Peachtree City near Atlanta and Hahira in South Georgia creating golf cart lanes along local roadways, according to the Georgia Municipal Association.

Hall County has several golf course communities built around public streets.

Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club in South Hall straddles Sloan Mill Road, a popular cut-through for motorists traveling between Ga. 53/Winder Highway and Poplar Springs Road.

Golf carts cross Sloan Mill every day, said James Morra, Royal Lakes' first assistant golf professional.

But he has heard of some drivers tooling up Sloan Mill to the Kroger-anchored shopping center or even across the four-lane Winder Highway to reach businesses on the other side.

"I just don't think you should do that," Morra said. "It's dangerous. There's no protection in the golf cart."

He also doesn't agree with the requirement for a safety restraint.

"I don't think you should be strapped into the cart," Morra said. "To me, if somebody is going to hit you, I think a bail-out would be easier than to take the hit."

Associated Press contributed to this report.

En el GTA San Andreas puedes encontrar cl?sicos como Welcome To The Jungle, Strutter, Killing In The Name, etc.

?

Nos vemos en el WLabs,
?Besitos!

TV Guide's Best TV Episodes of 2011

TV Guide:

From Oprah's surprisingly low-key farewell to the year's most soul-crushing break-up on "The Good Wife" (Kalicia, no!), the year was packed with fantastic hours of television -- pretty much all of which we watched. There were teary goodbyes ("Friday Night Lights's" Texas forever! "Smallville's" tights and flights!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations take place on the front porch of a cabin, like on "Homeland"?) and of course we made room for a little "Glee" (because certain underdogs deserved it).

Delayed iPhone 5 Release: Steve Job?s Death Commemoration, Hardware Redesign or Samsung?s Patent Dispute?

The hype surrounding the iPhone 5 and its delayed release has been considerable for some time now. Rumors aside, the death of Steve Jobs (a day after the iPhone 4S was released) and the seemingly endless war of patent disputes with rivals Samsung may have threatened the device's release.

According to Gene Munster on CNET, the iPhone 5 was expected by mid-summer in 2012. Meanwhile, the fact that Apple has committed itself to platform updates for their operating system iOS 5, could be another indication that their next major software release - the iOS 6 - will be released beyond June / July 2012 and therefore, so will the iPhone 5; the connection being that the new device will have a new OS.

Among other key developments, a revamped iPhone 5 interface is also on the cards, as is a redesigned form factor. Further speculations include the addition of flash memory to improve operation efficiency and overall system performance. Finally, a stronger battery could also be included, given the concerns users of the iPhone 4S have.

Like us on Facebook

Highly-placed sources within Apple Inc. suggest the phone could be released to commemorate the death of Steve Jobs, the companys' founder and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO); if that is true, expect the phone on Oct. 5, 2012. This report could have some truth in it, given earlier rumors that Jobs was quite uninterested in the development of the 4S, preferring to concentrate on its successor. Those reports also say the next iPhone could be black in color.

On the sales front, the iPhone 5 has a bright future ahead. A networkworld.com report suggests the device should grow revenue by 35 percent (as compared to the 18 percent Apple's smartphones currently generate), by fiscal year 2013.

Meanwhile, Samsung's 3G technology and its wireless patents account to at least four counts of patent infringements by Apple. In addition, reports from a Dutch court indicate the Cupertino-based company's defensive stance and arguments against a $100 million penalty as being excessive. The point is that given Samsung's acquisition of thousands of smartphone patents (against a few hundred for Apple), the latter could be fighting a losing cause should the iPhone 5 ever get banned.

Kim Kardashian: Klamoring to Prokreate with Reggie Bush?

Kim Kardashian isn't just over Kris Humphries, according to the latest issue of OK! Weekly. She's already planning for motherhood...

... with Reggie Bush!

“Kris just wasn’t the guy for Kim,” a source tells the tabloid. “Not as a husband, but certainly not as a father, and ever since they broke up she’s been thinking about Reggie more and more.”

Teen Mom ShockersReggie Bush and Kim Kardashian Pic

The insider goes on to describe the Dolphins running back as "father material," something that appeals to Kardashian, who has never made a secret of her desire to have children.

"Kim has always wanted to be a mom and she knows she will be," says the source, apparently ignoring Kim's whining last month about how she may be stuck forever as an aunt. "She has always adored children and she is naturally very maternal."

How does the universally hated Humphries feel about all this? The unnamed mole says Kim's desire to procreate with Bush is "throwing Kris for a loop" because:

“One minute she wants to have kids with him, the next minute she doesn’t want kids at all and she’s saying that she just wants to be a really good aunt. And now people are saying she wants to get pregnant with her ex!”

We kan see how that would be konfusing.

Targeted Cancer Therapies: Awakening the "Guardian of the Genome"

Approaches for Targeting p53

Approaches for Targeting p53. The figure depicts 3 classes of p53-targeting compounds under study and their implications in cancer therapeutics.

As its moniker "guardian of the genome" suggests, p53 has become recognized as one of the most important cancer-related molecules in the cell. As yet, p53-based research has not had a significant impact on cancer management. However, researchers continue to uncover complexities of and roles for the p53 pathway in both normal and cancerous cells, and the future for p53-targeted therapies is looking brighter than ever.

TP53, the gene encoding the human p53 protein, was discovered through the combined efforts of a number of different researchers in the late 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1990s that its vital role as a tumor suppressor was uncovered. It was this discovery that led to its being named "Molecule of the Year" by Science magazine in 1993.

p53 is a transcription factor that, upon activation, moves into the nucleus and regulates the expression of a host of target genes. Hundreds of p53-responsive genes have been reported, with diverse biological functions, but the key function of p53 is to act as a major barrier to tumorigenesis by responding to cell stress.

Cell stress causes aberrations, such as mutations, to be introduced into the cell's DNA that, if allowed to accumulate, can eventually lead to the development of cancer. Thus, an appropriate response to cell stress is essential to maintaining the integrity of the genome and preventing cancer. Under normal conditions, p53 is present at low levels in an inactive form, kept in check principally via a protein called murine double minute 2 (MDM2), which adds ubiquitin molecules to p53, "tagging" it for destruction by the cell's degradative machinery.

Under stress conditions, for example, if DNA is damaged, p53 is activated through posttranslational modification, such as phosphorylation, and accumulates in the nucleus in an active form. Activated p53 initiates numerous cell signaling pathways that ultimately drive 1 of 2 outcomes, depending on the type of cell and extent of the damage: (1) the cell cycle is halted, meaning the cell is unable to divide and form new cells until the damage has been repaired, preventing damaged DNA from being passed on to new cells; or (2) the cell is driven to commit suicide (apoptosis).

When the Barrier Is Breached
The importance of p53 as a tumor suppressor is reflected in the fact that it is mutated in more than half of all human cancers. More than 18,000 mutations in the TP53 gene have been identified thus far. It is most commonly mutated in lung (70%), colon, head and neck, ovarian, bladder (60%), and stomach (45%) cancers. Approximately 90% of mutations are found within the DNA-binding domain, rendering p53 unable to activate target genes.

Germinal mutations in p53 are associated with the rare Li-Fraumeni syndrome, in which individuals are predisposed to a variety of cancers.

In addition to mutations in TP53, p53 function can also be disrupted through a number of other routes, including alterations in mediators of p53 function, such as MDM2, and viral inactivation of p53. In 90% of cervical cancers, p53 is inactivated by a human papillomavirus-encoded protein, E6.

2 Sides to the p53 Coin
As the vital role of p53 was uncovered, the excitement reached a crescendo, and p53 became the focus of intensive cancer research around the globe. There was much speculation about the significant potential for p53-targeted cancer therapies, yet more than 30 years later that potential has yet to be realized.

Part of the complication arises from the finding that p53 has the potential to play 2 opposing roles in cancer progression: killer and protector. The foundation of conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, rests on the premise that they induce cellular damage, which stimulates p53-dependent apoptosis, killing off tumor cells. However, p53 may also inadvertently help tumor cells to survive by activating cellular senescence (permanent cell cycle arrest) pathways instead of apoptotic pathways.

It has been reported, for example, that some types of breast cancer with wild-type p53 show resistance to chemotherapeutic regimens, and a growing number of p53-induced survival genes have been identified. It is currently unclear how p53 determines whether to induce apoptosis or senescence, but this is an area of rapidly expanding research interest.

?

Interest in p53 has driven original approaches to drug discovery that could have widespread applications. ?

Not the Usual Suspects
While p53 is an attractive drug target for cancer, based on conventional drug development processes it is not an ideal target. However, continued interest in p53 has driven a variety of original approaches to drug discovery that could have widespread applications to drug development.

In an effort to reactivate mutant or inactivated p53, new methods of screening, chemistry, and structure-based design are being used to target the structure and folding of the p53 protein, and its interactions with other proteins. Two groups of p53-targeted agents have emerged from this: (1) small molecules that bind to mutant p53 and reactivate its wild-type function; and (2) inhibitors of the interaction between p53 and its negative regulator MDM2, effectively preventing its degradation.

Among those in preclinical or early clinical development are RG7112 (Roche Group), MI-219 (Ascenta Therapeutics), JNJ-26854165 (Johnson & Johnson), reactivation of p53 and induction of tumor cell apoptosis (RITA), the carbazole derivative PhiKan083, p53 reactivation and induction of massive apoptosis (PRIMA-1) and its more potent analog mutant p53 reactivation and induction of rapid apoptosis (MIRA-1) (Aprea AB), and nutlin-3. The most advanced are PRIMA-1, JNJ-26854165, and RG7112, all currently in phase I clinical trials.

Rendering of tumor protein p53

A presentation by Cellceutix Corporation at the 2011 meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research generated a substantial amount of interest when investigators reported the development of a new drug called Kevetrin, which activates p53 via a unique mechanism of action. Kevetrin outperformed current chemotherapies in a range of cancer cell lines in preclinical testing and was nongenotoxic (did not damage DNA). Cellceutix has filed a new drug application with the FDA and is planning clinical trials.

Researchers are also exploiting the genetic concept of "synthetic lethality" in searching for new p53-targeted therapies. The principle behind this is that there may be other defects that could be introduced into cancer cells that, on top of the p53 mutation, will selectively kill cancer cells, while not affecting normal cells with wild-type p53. A screen to identify compounds that inhibited the growth of p53-deficient tumor cells identified paclitaxel (an inhibitor of microtubule polymerization) and metformin (an antidiabetic drug).

Gene therapy is another approach to targeting p53 in cancer and involves the delivery of wild-type p53 into tumor cells using viral vectors. This approach was first developed in the 1990s. Gendicine (Shenzhen SiBiono GeneTech) has been approved in China since 2003. In the United States, development of Advexin (Introgen Therapeutics, Inc) stumbled in 2008 despite early promise.

Conversely, instead of targeting mutant p53, in certain situations it can be beneficial to target wild-type p53 in normal cells. Switching off p53 in normal cells could help to protect them against the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, allowing higher therapeutic doses to be used without harming normal cells. Several direct inhibitors of p53 have been identified, including pifithrin (PFT)-??and PFT-?, both being evaluated in preclinical research.

An approach known as cyclotherapy is also gaining in popularity. In this case, p53 would be switched on in normal cells, with the aim of activating cellular senescence pathways and stopping normal cells (with responsive p53) from proliferating. This is then followed by the use of a second drug that targets only proliferating tumor cells (with inactive p53).

Related >>> 5 Questions on the Development of p53

Finally, p53 vaccines are also undergoing clinical trials. Preclinical trials suggested that p53 might make an excellent candidate tumor cell antigen against which to raise a vaccine, thereby allowing patients to develop a specific immune response against tumor cells. INGN-225 is currently in phase I/II trials for small cell lung carcinoma at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, and has been shown to be well tolerated while inducing a p53-specific immune response that sensitized patients to chemotherapy.

Successful development of these different avenues of clinical exploration for p53 could revolutionize current cancer therapies and benefit a huge number of patients in years to come.

Reports: Yahoo exploring sale of Asian holdings (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Yahoo appears to be getting closer to giving its frustrated shareholders something they've long wanted: a sale of the Internet company's holdings in China and Japan.

The prospect of Yahoo Inc. finally consummating a deal with China's Alibaba Group and Softbank Corp., the controlling owner of Yahoo Japan, emerged in online reports published Wednesday by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, both newspapers reported Yahoo is exploring a proposal valued at about $17 billion, or $14 per share. The price reflects Wall Street's belief that Yahoo's investments in Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan have become the company's most valuable pieces. Yahoo's U.S. business has lost its luster as the company's website loses traffic and advertising revenue to Internet search leader Google Inc. and Facebook's social network.

Yahoo ended Wednesday with a market value of about $20 billion, based on its stock closing price of $15.99. The shares gained 88 cents, with most of the surge occurring after the reports of Yahoo's talks with its Asian partners.

If the deal comes together, Alibaba and Softbank would contribute cash and certain assets to newly formed entities. Yahoo would then surrender its 35 percent stake in Yahoo Japan and most of its holdings in Alibaba to gain control of new entities, according to the Times.

Yahoo would retain a 15 percent stake in privately held Alibaba, down from 42 percent as of Sept. 30, according to the company's most recent quarterly report.

The transaction would be designed to avoid a big tax bill ? a stumbling block in Yahoo's previous discussions to sell its Asian holdings.

Yahoo declined to comment Wednesday. Alibaba didn't respond to requests for comments.

The renewed talks among Yahoo, Alibaba and Softbank are the latest bit of boardroom intrigue that that has been unfolding since Yahoo abruptly fired Carol Bartz as CEO in early September after losing patience with her attempts to turn around the company during her 2 1/2 years on the job.

Since then, Yahoo's board has been mulling a variety of options that have included selling the Asian holdings, selling a 20 percent stake to buyout firms or even auctioning off the whole company.

The nine-director board has been leaning in different directions as it ruminates. Just a few weeks ago, it appeared the board was leaning toward selling a large stake to a group led by Silver Lake Partners for $16.60 per share or TPG Capital for $17.60 per share.

That idea didn't go over well with some of Yahoo's major shareholders, including hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, who has been threatening to overthrow the company's board.

Yahoo's board is scheduled to discuss the proposed divestiture of the company's Asian holdings in a Thursday meeting, according to the Times. The newspaper said the directors intend to decide whether to intensify negotiations that could last for a few more weeks.

If Yahoo decides to hold on to its Asian investments, Alibaba and Softbank could try to buy Yahoo in its entirety. That's something Alibaba CEO Jack Ma already has publicly said he would consider doing. There also have been reports the Asian companies have been working with buyout firms Bain Capital and the Blackstone Group to line up the financing to swallow Yahoo whole for about $25 billion, or $20 per share.

Should Yahoo decide to sell its Alibaba and Japan stakes, the shareholder reaction will probably hinge on the company's plans for the money raised in the deal. Analysts have said a special one-time dividend is one possibility.

Yahoo would also face another formidable challenge: finding a new CEO to run a company shorn of its most valuable assets as it battles steadily growing rivals in Google and Facebook. Tim Morse, Yahoo's chief financial officer, has been running the company on an interim basis since Bartz's ouster.

Graphic shows the cumulative death toll from the uprising in Syria

(AP) ? As government troops advanced on a village in northwestern Syria, activists say the terrified residents fled into a valley for fear of being arrested or worse. What happened next, one of the activists said, was "an organized massacre."

The troops surrounded the valley and unleashed a barrage of rockets, tank shells, bombs and gunfire in an hours-long assault, according to two human rights groups and a witness, killing more than 100 people and leaving no survivors in one of the bloodiest days of a crackdown by President Bashar Assad against a nine-month popular uprising.

The White House said it was "deeply disturbed" by Tuesday's attack, France called it a "murderous spiral," and the Arab League reminded the Assad regime of its responsibilities to protect its civilians.

The United Nations says more than 5,000 people have died since March as Syria has sought to put down the uprising ? part of the Arab Spring of protests that has toppled long-serving unpopular leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Members of Syria's opposition said the bloodshed outside the village of Kfar Owaid, about 30 miles from the northern border with Turkey in Idlib province, was evidence of the authoritarian leader's intent to intensify its crackdown on the uprising before Arab League observers arrive in the country Thursday. The death toll from two days of violence this week topped 200, including up to 70 army defectors killed near the city of Idlib, the activists said.

"It was an organized massacre," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based activist group. "The troops surrounded people, then killed them."

Kfar Owaid is part of the rugged mountainous region of Jabal al-Zawiyah, the scene of clashes between troops and army defectors, as well as weeks of intense anti-government protests.

One Kfar Owaid villager who is an anti-government activist told The Associated Press by telephone that scores of residents and activists had fled to the nearby Budnaya Valley ahead of the advancing troops. He said the security forces had lists of names of those who organized massive anti-regime protests recently in the village.

Those who fled to the valley were completely surrounded by troops, said the activist, who identified himself only as Abu Rabih for fear of government reprisal. The troops then opened fire with tanks, rockets and heavy machine guns, he said, adding that they also used bombs filled with nails to increase the number of casualties.

He said 110 people were killed in the attack, with 56 of them buried in Kfar Owaid on Wednesday. Others were buried in nearby villages.

Abdul-Rahman corroborated the Kfar Owaid witness account. The group, which uses a network of local activists to collect information on the crackdown, said 111 people from the village were killed Tuesday.

All of those in the valley were unarmed civilians and activists, with no armed military defectors among them, the rights groups said.

The Jabal al-Zawiyah region has been under intense attack by government forces since Saturday, Abu Rabih said.

Syrian officials have not commented on the allegations.

Assad agreed Monday to allow foreign monitors into Syria under an Arab League plan aimed at stopping the bloodshed. The huge toll Monday and Tuesday from the crackdown has reinforced opposition suspicions that Assad is trying to stall before a new round of international condemnation and sanctions. His regime already has been left isolated and under pressure from the Arab world as well as the West.

The Obama administration reacted to the latest reports by renewing its call for Assad to step down, saying he "does not deserve to rule Syria."

"The United States is deeply disturbed by credible reports that the Assad regime continues to indiscriminately kill scores of civilians and army defectors, while destroying homes and shops and arresting protesters without due process," the White House said in a statement read by spokesman Jay Carney, warning that the international community could take more steps against Syria.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland added that the stepped-up violence signaled that Syria's acceptance of the Arab League plan is merely a "stalling tactic."

"This is not the behavior of a government that is getting ready to implement the Arab League proposals," she told reporters, adding later that: "We've got lots of promises as the government continues to mow down its own people."

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said "everything must be done to stop this murderous spiral into which Bashar Assad is leading his people more every day." He added that the U.N. Security Council must "pass a firm resolution demanding the end to this repression."

The German government's human rights commissioner, Markus Loening, called for an immediate end to violence against deserters and demonstrators.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said "it is unacceptable" that so many people were killed after Syria agreed to an Arab League plan to halt the bloodshed.

In Cairo, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby expressed deep concern about reports of an escalation in violence and appealed to Damascus to shoulder its responsibilities to protect civilians in compliance with its pledges to abide by the league's plan.

The Arab League plan calls for Syria to halt its crackdown, open talks with the opposition, withdraw military forces from city streets and allow in human rights workers and journalists. The 22-member Arab League has also suspended Syria's membership and leveled economic and diplomatic sanctions.

Despite the new violence, the Arab League appeared to be going ahead with its plans to send in its first delegation of monitors on Thursday. An Arab League official said the second team of observers ? 30 experts in military affairs and human rights ? will head for Syria on Sunday, led by Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa of Sudan.

Another team of 100 observers will leave for Syria within two weeks, he said.

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, described this weeks killings as "brutal massacres and genocide," saying it has urged the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Syria. The SNC also asked the international community to help protect Syrian citizens.

The conflict, which began with peaceful protests in March, has become increasingly militarized in recent weeks, with clashes nearly every day between troops and army defectors who have joined the movement against Assad. Idlib province has witnessed some of the most intense clashes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces shot and killed three people in the Damascus suburb of Zabadani and one in the northern town of Saraqeb. It added that a large force stormed the town of Dael in the southern province of Daraa, wounding dozens of people. Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, said 15 people were killed Wednesday ? part of a death toll of more than 100 people this week.

On Monday, security forces killed up to 70 army defectors as they were deserting their military posts in Idlib, activists said.

The accounts could not be independently confirmed because Syria has banned most foreign journalists and places heavy restrictions on the work of local reporters.

In Damascus, meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy said five Iranian engineers who work at an electricity station in the restive Syrian city of Homs were kidnapped Tuesday ? a possible attempt by Assad's staunchest ally to corroborate his regime's claim that armed gangs are to blame for the anti-government uprising.
