Leaked emails shine rare light on Stratfor
SAN ANTONIO?? Private intelligence firm Stratfor was paid by Coca-Cola to gauge the threat of Olympic protesters, provided Dow Chemical information on environmental activists, and sells what clients and subscribers consider some of the best geopolitical analysis that money can buy.
Now the Texas-based think tank is the latest target of WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange, who says his anti-secrecy group has more than 5 million of Stratfor's emails and is promising to release damaging material in the coming weeks.
The first, small batch published Monday contained little that was particularly scintillating ? but revealed clients that Stratfor has long safeguarded and refused to disclose. They range from local universities to megacorporations like Coca-Cola, which apparently worried about animal-rights supporters crashing and disrupting the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
"To what extent will US-based PETA supporters travel to Canada to support activism?" a Coca-Cola manager asked a Stratfor analyst in a 2009 email.
An initial examination of the emails turned up a mix of the innocuous and the embarrassing. But Assange has accused Stratfor of serious deeds, such as funneling money to informants through offshore tax havens, monitoring activist groups on behalf of big corporations and making investments based on its secret intelligence.
"What we have discovered is a company that is a private intelligence Enron," Assange told London's Frontline Club, referring to the Texas energy giant whose spectacular bankruptcy turned it into a byword for corporate malfeasance.
Stratfor denied there was anything improper in the way it dealt with its contacts.
"Stratfor has worked to build good sources in many countries around the world, as any publisher of global geopolitical analysis would do," the company said in a statement. "We have done so in a straightforward manner and we are committed to meeting the highest standards of professional conduct."
Headquartered on the fourth floor of a bank building in downtown Austin, Stratfor might be one of the smallest targets on which WikiLeaks has set its sights. Founded in 1996, the company was reported to have the equivalent of around 40 full-time employees in Austin in 2008 and regularly plucks interns from the nearby University of Texas campus.
'Financial, sexual or psychological control'
According to one internal Stratfor document released by WikiLeaks, the company boasted having 292,000 paid subscribers but also acknowledged that the actual number of people reading its products is far fewer. Stratfor uses analysts to scour the Internet for open-source information, which they then use to determine where the world's next crisis might strike.
But the company also pays for information. One email released by WikiLeaks described a $6,000-a-month payment made to a Middle Eastern source, and another carried bits of gossip dropped by a retired spy. In December, Stratfor founder George Friedman gave advice on handling sources to one of his analysts gathering information on the health of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.

"If this is a source you suspect may have value, you have to take control (of) him. Control means financial, sexual or psychological control to the point where he would reveal his sourcing and be tasked," the email read. "This is difficult to do when you are known to be affiliated with an intelligence organization."
Stratfor Vice President of Intelligence Fred Burton bragged in other emails about his "trusted former CIA cronies" and promises to "see what I can uncover" about a classified FBI investigation.
Messages left for Burton weren't immediately returned. Stratfor has speculated that some of the leaked emails may have been altered or forged, although the firm did not provide any evidence of tampering. Anonymous said in a Twitter message that the suggestion of forgery was "pathetic."
Bobby Inman, former director of the National Security Agency and former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, called Stratfor's paid intelligence service competent and said the company has delivered "high-quality" analysis in the past.
Inman said Monday that the leaked list of clients would almost "certainly be damaging" to Stratfor's business for now.
"If you think who might find that information useful, it would be a competitor out there looking for clients," he said.
Some clients are already facing questions. Among the emails are reports apparently compiled for The Dow Chemical Co. on activists who have targeted the company over its links to the Bhopal gas leak disaster, which killed thousands of Indians and spawned a long-running legal battle.
Dow said in a written statement that "major companies are often required to take appropriate action to protect their people and safeguard their facilities," adding that it operated within the law.
Coca-Cola also defended reaching out to Stratfor before the 2010 Olympics, releasing a statement Monday that read, ""We consider it prudent to monitor for protest activities at any major event we sponsor, as such activities may affect our partners, customers, consumers or employees."
How WikiLeaks got the company's emails remains unclear. Assange refused to answer questions about the matter Monday, but Stratfor said the messages appeared to be the same ones stolen by hackers in December. That breach, claimed by the Internet activist group Anonymous, ravaged the company's servers and led to the disclosure of thousands of credit card numbers and other information.
Wired magazine quoted an unnamed member of Anonymous as saying that the stolen data had been transferred to WikiLeaks, which allegedly acknowledged receiving the transfer using a coded message on Twitter. Anonymous appeared to confirm that account, pointing to the cryptic message "rats for donavon," which WikiLeaks posted Dec. 30.
Several media groups, including Rolling Stone magazine and German broadcaster NDR, said they have been offered advance access to the emails and will publish stories based on the documents if appropriate.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) ? The fireballer has flamed out once again, and this time it may be for good.
Minnesota Twins reliever Joel Zumaya was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right elbow on Sunday, meaning his latest comeback bid has ended almost before it began.
Zumaya had signed an incentive-laden, one-year deal with the Twins, who hoped he could bolster their bullpen with his 100 mph heat. General manager Terry Ryan knew Zumaya's long injury history when he offered the contract, but the possibility of getting the overpowering arm that electrified the Tigers in 2006 intrigued him.
"I took a risk. It was a high risk with high reward," Ryan said after the MRI exam revealed the torn ulnar collateral ligament. "Unfortunately it didn't work. And he feels bad. I feel bad."
Zumaya lasted just 13 pitches in his first session of live batting practice Saturday before walking off the mound with pain in his elbow. Ryan spoke with him on Sunday after they received the news, but said it was too early to talk about Zumaya's plans for the future.
The 27-year-old could choose to have Tommy John surgery and start another exhaustive rehab program that could last a year or longer. Or he could choose to retire.
"He's distraught, as you'd expect," Ryan said of Zumaya, who was unavailable for comment. "He's going to come in here in the next day or so and we're going to talk about the immediate future for him."
Zumaya had not thrown a pitch since June 2010 after breaking his elbow while pitching for Detroit in a game at Target Field. He has never been better than in his rookie season with the Tigers, when he was a 21-year-old blast furnace who struck out 97 hitters in 83 1-3 innings and became one of the most feared setup men in the game.
Injuries to his wrist, finger and shoulder followed, limiting him to fewer than 40 innings in each of the next four seasons. Then his elbow snapped in 2010, a frightening scene that led some to wonder if his body could withstand the sheer force of the pitches he uncorked.
But he had never torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, a common and devastating injury that usually requires surgery and at least 12 months of rehab before a pitcher is ready to get back on the mound.
After a long and arduous rehabilitation of his broken elbow, Zumaya worked out for several teams this winter. Looking for a right-hander at the back end of their bullpen to complement left-handed setup man Glen Perkins and closer Matt Capps, the Twins offered him $850,000. The contract is only guaranteed for $400,000.
"It's ironic that he tore this ligament because that was one of the area's he was healthy," Ryan said. "But when you have something break, sometimes other things go, too, and that's the chance you take. And that's the chance we took, I took. I'll take full responsibility for the decision, it just didn't work. It's as simple as that."
But Ryan said he didn't regret the decision to sign Zumaya.
"Sometimes you have to take chances," Ryan said. "It seemed like a worthwhile chance."
Zumaya had only been in the clubhouse for a couple of weeks, but he'd already managed to make a strong impression with the team. He pitched against the Twins for the Tigers and manager Ron Gardenhire said he quickly grew to like the heavily tattooed reliever who electrified Detroit's run to the World Series as a rookie in 2006.
"He looks like some monster out there pitching against you," Gardenhire said. "But you get him in your clubhouse and you realize there's special people and he's a special person and it's a really sad day for him and his family and our baseball team, too, because we were all hoping this guy would be able to get back on this thing and make it through. Unfortunately it didn't work out."
Left-hander Francisco Liriano was taken aback when he heard the news.
"Wow," said Liriano, who had Tommy John surgery in 2006. "I feel bad for him. He's been hurt probably every year. Wow."
Now the Twins have to look elsewhere among the 33 pitchers they brought to camp to help shore up their bullpen. Players like Anthony Swarzak, Alex Burnett, Jared Burton and Kyle Waldrop could get looks, even though none of them have strong histories of late-inning relief roles.
"If I'm one of those guys down in that clubhouse, well, there's some innings there to be had, I'd better go out there and get 'em," Ryan said. "You want to make the team? Let's go."

Buffett's firm reports 30 pct drop in 4Q earnings
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Berkshire Hathaway says its fourth-quarter net income fell 30 percent as the paper value of its derivative contracts fell, but most of its subsidiaries performed well.
Berkshire CEO Warren Buffett detailed the company's 2011 performance Saturday in his annual letter to shareholders.
Berkshire reported fourth-quarter net income of $3.05 billion, or $1,846 per Class A share. That's down from $4.4 billion net income, or $2,656 per share, a year ago.
Berkshire's profit fell short of the $1,875 per share that the four analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting.
The biggest difference was the change in estimated value of Berkshire's investments and derivative contracts. That fell to $382 million this year from last year's $1.4 billion.
Berkshire's quarterly revenue grew 5 percent to $37.96 billion from last year's $36.17 billion.

Fitch Ratings affirms both the senior notes at ?AAAsf? and subordinate student loan note at ?BBBsf? issued by SLM Student Loan Trust series 2007-2. The Rating Outlook remains Negative for the senior classes. The Outlook for the subordinate class is revised to Positive. Fitch used its ?Global Structured Finance Rating Criteria?, and ?U.S. FFELP Student Loan ABS Surveillance Criteria?, as well as ?Rating U.S. Federal Family Education Loan Program Student Loan ABS? to review the ratings.
The Positive Outlook is assigned to the subordinate note to account for the increase in parity and positive performance trends. This transaction is structured to exclude the reserve account from the parity calculation once the pool factor falls below 40%. However, Fitch gives credit to the funds in the reserve account when conducting our analysis. The current pool factor is 47.30% and the balance in the reserve account is at the floor of $4,000,000. If you are like me, you?ve had plenty of experience with BAD customer support. Just think about the final time you?d a bad experience with a product or perhaps a service.
Perhaps the product or service did not live up to the sales pitch. Maybe the company was unresponsive for your calls or even emails. Maybe they didn?t do what they said they were going to do. Or they gave the run-around when you called to report a problem or ask a question.
If you think about it, all of these negative experiences steam down to something, a lack of customer support. And a lack of customer service usually comes from a lack of customer focus. It appears many businesses have simply misplaced sight of who they are truly in business to serve.
Rather than the old saying, ?the customer is always correct,? many companies seem nearly bothered through customers nowadays. In fact, I?ll let you within on a little secret from my earlier ad company days. We used to have a saying, ?this business would be great, if it wasn?t for the angpao customers.?
How ridiculous is that?! We wouldn?t have experienced a job if it weren?t for that clients (I am older and wiser now!). Yes, sometimes clients can be difficult, but they are the main reason we are running a business. Our job would be to serve all of them. If they are annoyed, we should encouraged the opportunity to find out why, and use that info to improve the product or service.
Indeed, sometimes you will run into a few yahoo who?s being completely unreasonable and you just have to deal with this. But frequently, client issues uncover a problem or something we can improve upon.
Therefore make it a point to really listen to your visitors. Make a commitment to treat all your customers well. In the end, giving great customer services is one of the best and least expensive marketing tools available. When a person treat your customers well, or even better, when you deliver beyond their expectations, you?ll be rewarded.
Individuals happy customers are the same clients who will happily refer you. The opposite often happens. If you disappoint a client, or even don?t deliver what you guarantee, or you simply treat all of them badly, they will likely tell everyone they know how horrible you are. In fact, those negative clients are more prone to talk about a person than your happy customers. Unfortunately, that is just the method it usually works.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have coaxed gold into nanowires as a way of creating an inexpensive material for detecting poisonous gases found in natural gas. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and principal investigator of the research project, developed a self-assembly method that uses scaffolds (a structure used to hold up or support another material) to grow gold nanowires. Their findings, titled "Welding of Gold Nanoparticles on Graphitic Templates for Chemical Sensing," were published online Jan. 22 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
"The most common methods to sense gases require bulky and expensive equipment," says Star. "Chip-based sensors that rely on nanomaterials for detection would be less expensive and more portable as workers could wear them to monitor poisonous gases, such as hydrogen sulfide."
Star and his research team determined gold nanomaterials would be ideal for detecting hydrogen sulfide owing to gold's high affinity for sulfur and unique physical properties of nanomaterials. They experimented with carbon nanotubes and graphene?an atomic-scale chicken wire made of carbon atoms?and used computer modeling, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy to study the self-assembly process. They also tested the resulting materials' responses to hydrogen sulfide.
"To produce the gold nanowires, we suspended nanotubes in water with gold-containing chloroauric acid," says Star. "As we stirred and heated the mixture, the gold reduced and formed nanoparticles on the outer walls of the tubes. The result was a highly conductive jumble of gold nanowires and carbon nanotubes."
To test the nanowires' ability to detect hydrogen sulfide, Star and his colleagues cast a film of the composite material onto a chip patterned with gold electrodes. The team could detect gas at levels as low as 5ppb (parts per billion)?a detection level comparable to that of existing sensing techniques. Additionally, they could detect the hydrogen sulfide in complex mixtures of gases simulating natural gas. Star says the group will now test the chips' detection limits using real samples from gas wells.

A day after telling an Ohio audience that Obama's agenda is based on "some phony theology, not a theology based on the Bible," the GOP presidential candidate said he wasn't criticizing the president's Christianity.
"I've repeatedly said I don't question the president's faith. I've repeatedly said that I believe the president's Christian," Santorum told CBS' "Face the Nation."
"I am talking about his world view, and the way he approaches problems in this country. I think they're different than how most people do in America," he said in the broadcast interview.
The former Pennsylvania senator said Obama's environmental policies promote ideas of "radical environmentalists," who, Santorum argues, oppose greater use of the country's natural resources because they believe "man is here to serve the Earth." He said that was the reference he was making Saturday in his Ohio campaign appearance when he denounced a "phony theology."
"I think that is a phony ideal. I don't believe that is what we're here to do," Santorum said. "We're not here to serve the Earth. The Earth is not the objective. Man is the objective."
Obama's campaign said Santorum's remarks were another attack on the president's faith by Republican rivals in a nominating contest that has grown increasingly bitter and negative.
"It's just time to get rid of this mindset in our politics that, if we disagree, we have to question character and faith," said Robert Gibbs, Obama's former press secretary, on ABC's "This Week."
"Those days have long passed in our politics. Our problems and our challenges are far too great," Gibbs said.
Santorum said his claim that Obama's health care overhaul encourages abortions stems from the fact that insurance companies are required to pay for prenatal testing, which he said will result in more pregnant women having more procedures. He specified amniocentesis, a procedure that can identify physical problems in the unborn.
"The bottom line is a lot of prenatal tests are done to identify deformities in utero and the customary procedure is to encourage abortion," he said.

Occupy protester's Twitter posts subpoenaed
NEW YORK?? Prosecutors have subpoenaed the Twitter records of an Occupy Wall Street protester who was arrested in October during a mass protest on the Brooklyn Bridge.
The January 26 subpoena from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office seeks "user information, including email address," along with three months' worth of tweets from @destructuremal, the Twitter handle for Malcolm Harris.
Harris, 23, a freelance writer and editor who lives in the New York borough of Brooklyn, said Tuesday that Twitter sent a copy of the subpoena to him on Monday. He posted it ? where else? ? on Twitter.
"When you get an email from Twitter Legal, you assume it's a phishing scam, trying to get your password," he said. "It turned out that it is a phishing scam, but it's from the prosecutors."
It is not clear what specific evidence prosecutors are after. But the subpoena is an example of posts on social media sites posing potential legal problems for authors.
Harris said his lawyer, Martin Stolar of the National Lawyers Guild, would file a motion to quash the subpoena. Twitter has agreed not to comply with the subpoena while Stolar prepares the motion, Harris said.
A spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney's office declined comment.
The subpoena seeks Harris' tweets from September 15 ? two days before the Occupy Wall Street movement began ? to December 15. Harris is not sure what tweets could be fodder for prosecutors; Twitter's interface does not allow him to review all of his old tweets.
Stolar was not immediately available for comment Tuesday evening.
A Twitter spokesman declined to comment on the case but confirmed that the San Francisco-based company's policy is "to notify users about law enforcement and governmental requests for their information, unless we are prevented by law from doing so," in order to protect users' rights.
Harris is one of hundreds of Occupy-related defendants whose cases are still winding their way through the court system. A special courtroom has been set up to handle more than 1,800 cases in New York, the vast majority involving misdemeanor charges.
He was charged with disorderly conduct and is due back in court on February 29. Like a number of Occupy protesters, he has vowed to take the case to trial rather than accept a deal from prosecutors.
The National Lawyers Guild is representing many of the arrested protesters.

Few guidelines exist on when to shut down roads (AP)
ORLANDO, Fla. ? Whether it's a dust storm in Arizona, a whiteout in Maine or wildfire in Florida, the call to shut down a major highway usually rests with local officials, who in some cases have little, if any, written guidelines to follow.
In many cases, officials rely on what officers at the scene are seeing ? or what they can't see ? when they make the decision. In Florida, a foggy, smoke-filled stretch of Interstate 75 in Gainesville was closed in both directions for three hours early Sunday. Shortly after troopers decided to reopen the highway, cars slammed into tractor-trailers on both sides of the interstate in two pileups that killed 10 people.
Florida officials said they were willing to review their protocols, but the Highway Patrol was also quick to put the safety onus on drivers, saying conditions can change in an instant and motorists must be prepared to quickly make good decisions.
Federal transportation agencies have never issued guidelines on when to close roads due to fog, fires and dust storms. National groups representing insurance companies, the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board all said they had not heard of such a policy. The NTSB is investigating the Gainesville crash.
Florida is vulnerable to smoky roads since it has one of the nation's most active prescribed fire programs. It has a 16-item checklist for "smoke/fog incidents" that is part of a larger 28-page policy manual for Florida Highway Patrol shift commanders.
Closing a road, which can be costly for tractor-trailers shipping goods, is decided by a supervisor who consults with troopers at the scene, although any patrolman can make the call if there is imminent danger, said Capt. Mark Brown, chief of the patrol's media relations. In the I-75 pileup, a district lieutenant based in Gainesville who was the supervisor at the scene made the decision. A day earlier, a different spokesman said a sergeant and lieutenant determined after about three hours that conditions had cleared enough for drivers.
"We rely on the members on the ground, and their physical presence, people who are actually there ? their feedback. The person that can actually see what is going on," Brown said.
Troopers also use information and forecasts from the National Weather Service. One key piece of information is an index estimating the humidity and smoke dispersion on a scale of 1 to 10. If the score is 7 or higher, the road should be closed.
The index score for early Sunday had been forecast to be 6 in a four-county region that includes the crash area, according to the National Weather Service.
The Low Visibility Occurrence Risk Index was introduced to troopers around the state following a deadly crash in 2008 on Interstate 4 between Orlando and Tampa, about 125 miles south of Sunday's pileup. Four people were killed and 38 injured in that crash, which was caused by heavy smoke and fog.
"The index was added to get a more scientific approach to decision-making than what was used before," said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman based in the Tampa area.
More than anything, troopers rely on the conditions they are seeing.
"If I'm a road sergeant and I go to the scene and can't see anything, I call up and I say, `Hey, we're closing the road,'" Gaskins said.
In Maine, the nation's most heavily wooded state, the decision is left up to the trooper on scene.
"Every situation is going to be different," said Duane Brunelle, a safety specialist at the Maine Department of Transportation.
In Georgia, Department of Transportation engineers work with Georgia State Patrol officers. Their protocol treats smoke more seriously than fog.
"Fog is often so widespread that it would be logistically impossible to address," according to the state's road visibility policy. It added: "However, an isolated patch of fog with sufficient density to hamper visibility ... should be treated the same as smoke."
The Arizona Department of Transportation is testing out a new dust warning system that takes field readings on weather conditions, humidity and wind speed. The goal is to detect potential dust storms a few days before they hit and begin posting warnings on signs.
Investigators on Tuesday released the names of the seventh and eighth people who died in the crashes as they worked to identify two other bodies that were so badly burned that dental records and vehicle identification numbers may have to be used to get positive IDs: a 22-year-old man, Vontavia Robinson, of Williston; and Christie Nguyen, a 27-year-old college student from Gainesville.
Nguyen, a dance troupe member, was a passenger in a car that crashed on northbound I-75. A former teacher, Gwen Keith, described her as creative, bubbly and smart.
"She was very vivacious," Keith said. "She was very artistic."
