The X-51A Hypersonic Plane: What Went Wrong?

The payoff for reaching air-breathing hypersonic flight?five times the speed of sound, without rockets?would be revolutionary. A hypersonic airliner could carry passengers to any place on Earth within four hours using conventional airports and infrastructure. And then there are the incredible military applications of such speed: imagine a cruise missile that could strike a target 500 miles away in just 10 minutes.

The Air Force and DARPA have been partnering on the X-51A unmanned scramjet project, the most advanced hypersonic aircraft yet built. But multiple tests have so far ended in abrupt failure. Most recently, the plane lost control during a test in August before it even could start its scramjet engine. The Air Force?which administers the program at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Ohio? initially offered few details about what went wrong. An ongoing investigation has by now narrowed the cause to a premature unlatching and subsequent failure of a control fin, according to program manager Charlie Brink.

As planned, the X-51A dropped from a B-52 bomber out of Edwards Air Force Base in California. Then a rocket attached to the back boosted the vehicle to its operating speed. But, Brink told reporters on a conference call this week, during the boost, one of the aircraft's four control fins became unlatched, apparently disabling the actuator needed to control the X-51A in free flight after the booster drops off.

After the rocket booster and its controlling influence dropped away, said Brink, "We had three fins working really hard to control a vehicle that needs four fins." The vehicle went out of control only a second and a half later. "We did not even attempt?we didn't get to the point in the sequence where we start putting fuel into the engine and try and light the engine. So for this flight, we just didn't have a propulsion experiment," he said.

Although this is not yet confirmed, it appears that vibrations during the rocket boost shook the control fin free of its spring-loaded latches, which should make a fix relatively straightforward, Brink said. The fix could be as simple as unlimbering the control fins and powering up their actuators right after the X-51A drops from the bomber instead of waiting until they are actually needed when the booster falls away.

The unmanned X-51A is 25 feet long and weights about 4000 pounds. Its core technology is a supersonic combustion ramjet, or scramjet. Scramjets differ from ordinary jets in that they do away with compressors and turbines?the moving parts that limit the speed of the fastest jets to under Mach 3. Instead, once boosted to supersonic speed by means such as a rocket or conventional jet engine, a scramjet depends on the sheer force of incoming air to achieve the compression required for the high burn rate of hypersonic flight.

The hypersonic challenge has been likened to keeping a match lit in a hurricane because the extreme force of the air flowing into the engine makes sustained combustion difficult. It has plagued aerospace engineers for the last fifty years, with progress advancing painfully slowly. Test flights often occur years apart. It's a high-stress, high-risk undertaking for the researchers involved. When I first spoke with Brink before the first test flight, he told me he would be holed up in the men's room at Edwards Air Force Base throwing up when the test vehicles launched. "And I have been," he told me on the conference call.

The goal of the X-51A program is to run a scramjet engine in flight until the fuel tanks run dry, proving out the possibility of controlled, indefinite duration air-breathing hypersonic flight. In terms of minutes flown, it's already the most successful hypersonic aircraft to leave the lab, even though it has yet to achieve its objective of 4.5 minutes of powered flight. The first of the four vehicles the program has constructed flew under its own power for 2.5 minutes in 2010; it broke the previous hypersonic flight record held by NASA's X-43, which stayed lit for all of 10 seconds in 2004. (That vehicle ran on hydrogen as fuel, while the X-51A runs on JP-7 jet fuel, which should make production vehicles easier to support because they will be able to use fueling infrastructure already in place for conventional aircraft.) The second X-51A shut down prematurely in a test in 2011 after only 10 seconds of powered flight.

Following this third test in August 2012, just one of the single-use X-51As remains. The $300 million program provides for a final flight, which should happen in spring or summer 2013. Even though the future of hypersonic research in the U.S. remains uncertain beyond that point, Brink expressed confidence that the Air Force will keep its hand in the game. "We're working with industry on follow-on programs," he said. He mentioned as a possible option the proposed Air Force High Speed Strike Weapon Demonstration Program, which would call for the successful demonstration of a hypersonic cruise missile. "But I really can't get into the details of that project right now," he said.

Plants provide accurate low-cost alternative for diagnosis of West Nile Virus

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? While the United States has largely been spared the scourge of mosquito-borne diseases endemic to the developing world -- including yellow fever, malaria and dengue fever -- mosquito-related illnesses in the US are on the rise. One pathogen of increasing concern in the U.S. is an arbovirus known as West Nile.

Now Qiang "Shawn" Chen, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute and a professor in the College of Technology and Innovation has developed a new method of testing for West Nile, using plants to produce biological reagents for detection and diagnosis.

The new research, conducted by Chen and his colleagues at the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology recently appeared in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology.

"One critical issue in WNV diagnosis concerns the difficulty of distinguishing WNV infection from other closely related diseases, such as St. Louis encephalitis and dengue fever, due to the cross-reactivity of antibodies among flaviviruses," Chen says. "It is important to develop better diagnostic tools with enhanced accuracy for both treatment and diagnostic purposes."

Thus far, the 2012 outbreak of West Nile in the United States is on track to be one of the worst on record. According to the Center for Disease Control, 48 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes as of October 9th of this year.

To date, 4,249 cases of West Nile virus disease have been reported in humans, including 168 deaths. Of these cases 2,123 (50 percent) appeared in the more severe or neuroinvasive form of the disease, causing meningitis and encephalitis, while 2,126 cases were classified as non-neuroinvasive.

These figures represent the highest number of West Nile cases reported to the CDC since 2003, with nearly 70 percent reported from eight states: Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Dakota, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Over a third of total cases have been reported from Texas.

The alarming upswing in West Nile cases coupled with their broad geographic distribution demand new techniques for both diagnosis and treatment. Chen and his colleagues have been exploiting the power of plant biotechnology to achieve these goals.

Earlier, Chen's group developed the first successful plant-derived therapeutic to combat West Nile post-infection, reporting their results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. The current study advances efforts to create a diagnostic test for West Nile that will overcome barriers of existing methods, including limited accuracy, prohibitive cost and scalability.

In nearly all cases, West Nile is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire the virus after feeding on infected birds. The virus then migrates to the mosquito's salivary glands, from which it may be injected into humans and animals. There, it can multiply and produce characteristic symptoms of West Nile disease. These may present as flu-like malaise including fever and chills, headaches, fatigue and pain in muscles and joints. Symptoms typically last three to six days, but may persist for weeks.

In around 1 in 150 WNV cases, individuals develop infections of the brain (encephalitis) or surrounding tissue (meningitis), often producing severe headache, fever, stiffness, confusion, convulsions, coma, tremors, muscle weakness and paralysis. Those with neurologic involvement may require weeks of hospitalization and may suffer permanent health effects including muscle weakness and paralysis. Around 10 percent of people with WNV encephalitis die.

Faced with the growing threat of mosquito-borne epidemics, researchers like Chen stress the necessity of developing rapid, low-cost platforms for diagnosis of West Nile. Traditionally, cell cultures from serum, cerebrospinal fluid or tissues have been examined but the short viremic phase and low viral count of WNV in blood and spinal fluid limit the sensitivity and accuracy of such tests. Protein-based methods like ELISA have become standard tests for West Nile, yielding better results but at considerably higher cost and with limited scalability.

In the current study, plants were exploited for their ability to produce large volumes of proteins that can be used for diagnostic testing. As Chen explains, proteins produced in this way traditionally require a lengthy time period before transgenic plant lines can be established. By contrast, the new method, which makes use of plant viral-based vectors like Tobacco Mozaic Virus and Gemini Virus, relies on the ability of plants to transiently express particular target genes, yielding the desired protein in 1-2 weeks.

The technique provides the speed and flexibility of a bacterial gene expression system while permitting the posttranslational modifications of proteins afforded by mammalian cell culture approaches.

Chen's group used plant transient expression systems to produce two varieties of protein reagents useful for the detection and diagnosis of WNV -- one a recombinant antigen and one a monoclonal antibody. High expression levels of both reagents were observed in two kinds of plants: Nicotiana benthamiana (a close relative of tobacco) and lettuce. The two reagents may be readily purified to greater than 95 percent and retain their native functionality and specificity.

The production of plant-derived antigens and monoclonal antibodies offers an attractive alternative to the use of mammalian, insect or bacterial cell cultures and demonstrates the capability of plants to provide accurate and flexible diagnostic reagents not only for WNV but a broad range of arboviruses affecting human health.

"Our test will improve the accuracy of diagnosis, leading to the proper treatment of patients affected by WNV," Chen says. "The plant-derived monoclonal antibody we examined is not only low-cost, but highly specific for WNV antigen and does not recognize antigens from other flaviviruses." Chen further notes that application of this research will ultimately allow a broad range of WNV surveillance capabilities, from clinical diagnosis to global distribution patterns in wild bird and mosquito populations.

West Nile Facts

The West Nile Virus (WNV) is an arbovirus belonging to the Flavivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family

Mosquitoes that have acquired the virus from infected birds transmit WNV.

First identified in the Eastern Hemisphere and widely distributed in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, WNV entered the Western Hemisphere in 1999, via New York City.

Since its American debut, WNV has infected over 30,000 people with severe forms of the disease, with an untold number of additional cases remaining undiagnosed.

Infection with WNV can be asymptomtic or can lead to West Nile fever or severe West Nile disease.

Around 20 percent of people who become infected with WNV will develop West Nile fever, with symptoms including fever, headache, exhaustion and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and swollen lymph glands. The illness can last from a few days to several weeks.

The symptoms of severe WNV disease -- also known as neuroinvasive disease, including West Nile encephalitis or meningitis or West Nile poliomyelitis -- include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, and paralysis.

Approximately 1 in 150 people infected with WNV develop a more severe form of disease. While serious illness can occur in people of any age, those over 50 as well as individuals with compromised immunity (including transplant patients) are at the highest risk for severe illness following WNV infection.

The incubation time for WNV is typically 2 to 15 days. It is believed that infection confers lifelong immunity to the virus.

This year (2012) has seen a serious uptick in West Nile cases and will go on record as among the most severe in terms of case numbers.

A mild winter and a hot, dry summer may have contributed to the rapid spread of WNV across the U.S. this year. Climate change has been implicated as a factor exacerbating the spread of WNV.

The susceptibility to severe symptoms of WNV disease appears linked to genetic traits. Further, advanced age is one of the primary risk factors for severe neurological disease, long-term morbidity and death.

Plant production for diagnostic protein reagents may easily be scaled up to suit existing need, as in the case of a sudden WNV epidemic.

Plants are ideal protein bioreactors, due to their capacity to produce large volumes or proteins at low cost and their ability to make appropriate posttranslational modifications of proteins.

Currently, there is no vaccine against WNV, nor effective therapeutics approved for human use. The best tactics of prevention are:

  • Cover exposed skin with long pants and long-sleeved shirts, particularly during early morning or evening hours when mosquitoes are most active
  • Use insect repellent
  • Keep window screens in good repair
  • Try to reduce or eliminate areas of standing water where mosquitoes breed, including bird baths, wading pools, tire swings, etc

Sony PSN hacking lawsuit dismissed by judge

A California district judge has dismissed a handful of charges that plaintiffs brought against Sony, including negligence, restitution, and unjust enrichment in its handling of a PlayStation Network data breach last year.

Several lawsuits were filed against Sony PlayStation Network in the wake of a major security breach of the personal data of more than 75 million customers in April 2011.

On Friday, Judge Anthony Battaglia of the U.S. District Court in Southern California ruled that one of those class action suits is invalid, according to Courthouse News.

When the attack happened in 2011, more than 75 million customer accounts of Sony's PlayStation Network and Qriocity service were exposed in a hack on 10 of the company's servers in San Diego. Later, 25 million customer accounts of Sony Online Entertainment were found to be compromised as well. The information exposed included customer names, e-mail addresses, billing addresses, passwords, phone numbers, genders, and birth dates. Sony maintains that credit card information was not stolen.

The company came under fire almost immediately for not alerting its customers of the breach for several days after it occurred. Then the PSN and Qriocity services were taken offline for almost a month while Sony scrambled to rebuild its security systems and undertook a forensic investigation into the breach.

The class action lawsuit that Battaglia dismissed was filed in June of last year and alleged that Sony "failed to follow basic industry-standard protocols to safeguard its customers' personal and financial information, thereby creating foreseeable harm and injury to the Plaintiff class."

Battaglia ruled, however, that these plaintiffs' motives in going after Sony were unjustified. According to Courthouse News, he said Sony was not in violation of California consumer-protection laws or guilty of bailment charges.

"None of the named plaintiffs subscribed to premium PSN services, and thus received the PSN services free of cost," Battaglia said, according to Courthouse News. "Plaintiffs freely admit, plaintiffs' personal information was stolen as a result of a criminal intrusion of Sony's Network. Plaintiffs do not allege that Sony was in any way involved with the data breach."

Additionally, Battaglia said Sony couldn't be fully responsible for the hack. "There is no such thing as perfect security," he said, according to The Register. "We cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information transmitted to us."

The plaintiffs now have until November 9 to decide if they want to file an amended complaint.

After the security breach and the several lawsuits filed against Sony, the company added a controversial change to its Terms of Service and User Agreement in September 2011. Under the revised terms, consumers now must waive the right to participate in any class action lawsuit filed after August 20, 2011 against the gaming and content delivery portion of Sony .

CNET contacted Sony PlayStation Network for comment. We'll update the story when we get more information.

ASUS announces three budget-friendly laptops with touchscreens, the VivoBook Q200, S400 and S500

Remember when Ultrabook prices dropped to around $700 and everyone cheered? Well, get ready for some one-upping: here at a New York City press event, ASUS just announced a line of lightweight, touchscreen laptops, and let's just say the prices are pretty aggressive. The new family, which will carry the name VivoBook, includes 11-, 14- and 15-inch models, with the 11.6-inch Q200 (aka the X202) starting at $499 with a Core i3 processor. The 14-inch S400, meanwhile, will start at $599, while the 15-inch S500 will go for $649 and up. Across the board, there will be configurations with Core i5 and i7 processors, but again, i3 is the starting spec here. As you can see in the photo above, the design isn't all that different from the current-gen Zenbook Prime family, though they lack some of that line's higher-end features -- namely, 1080p screens and solid-state storage. ASUS so far hasn't said when these laptops will ship here in the US, but we'll be sure to follow up with more specifics as we learn them.

Women: Do you know all your contraceptive choices? | Life And ...

(BPT) ? It has been said that most of life is about making choices and the rest is about luck. Every day, women are faced with numerous choices ? both big and small, from which political affiliations we hold to how we raise our families to what to serve for dinner to how to style our hair. One area that we don?t often realize how many choices we have is the same area that should not be left to luck ? birth control.?

Almost all sexually experienced women report having used some method of contraception so choosing birth control is a decision that most women will make at some point in their lives. However, according to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly half of the 3.1 million unintended pregnancies that occur in the U.S. each year occur in women who reported taking contraception during the month they conceived.?

What are your options?

There are many non-permanent methods of birth control to choose from which include everything from barrier methods to hormonal methods to implantable devices. Among women who use reversible contraception, most choose methods such as condoms and oral contraceptive pills. However, a recent study showed that many women overestimate the effectiveness of many of these options and that overestimation has potential implications for unplanned pregnancies.

?There are many contraceptive options and it can take some women a while to find the one that works best for them. Some of my patients have said that they have difficulty remembering to take a pill every day because they are just so busy. Others are not happy with the change to their cycle, along with any number of other reasons,? says Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist in private practice in New Haven, Conn. ?I encourage my patients to think about what is most important to them with contraception. I think women want the most effective solution that also meets their needs.?

Choosing a contraceptive method

Studies have shown that women prioritize effectiveness, safety and ease of use when choosing a contraceptive method. As you prepare for your next well-woman doctor?s visit, here are some questions you may wish to ask your health care provider about your contraceptive choices:

* How effective and reliable is my current birth control method?

* Does my family history or current medical condition affect my choice of birth control?

* How can I make sure I am using it correctly?

* Do I need a prescription? If so, how often will I need to refill it?

* If I decide to have a baby, how soon can I become pregnant after discontinuing this method?

* Can I breast feed with this birth control method?

* Could other medications I may take interfere with the effectiveness of my birth control method?

*Are there any side effects I should consider?

For more information, please visit www.BirthControlForYou.com.?

Romney blimp makes emergency landing in South Fla.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) ? High winds forced a blimp-like aircraft carrying an advertisement for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to make an emergency landing in South Florida.

Davie police say the two people aboard the aircraft got out safely when it landed in a neighborhood around 7:10 p.m. Sunday.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/Sds0g7) reports the blimp was traveling to North Perry Airport in nearby Pembroke Pines. It was flying from Boca Raton, where Monday night's presidential debate between Romney and President Barack Obama will be held at Lynn University.

Police Capt. Dale Engle says the deflated aircraft carried an advertisement that read, "America needs Romney."

No one on the ground was injured.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea banned activists from launching anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the heavily fortified border into North Korea on Monday in an unusual move to halt their propaganda campaign.

North Korea's military said last week it would strike if South Korean activists carried out their plan to fly balloons carrying the leaflets across the border. South Korea pledged to retaliate if it was attacked.

Hundreds of South Korean police were mobilized to seal off roads to prevent activists and other people from entering a launch site near the border, police said. Before Monday's action, the government had implored activists to stop their campaign, but it cited freedom of speech in not making further attempts to intervene.

Residents near the launch site were also asked to evacuate to underground bunkers, according to local official Kim Jin-a.

North Korea has regularly issued similar threats without following through. But Seoul's Yonhap news agency reported Monday the entry ban was imposed as South Korea detected North Korea uncovering artillery muzzle covers and deploying troops at artillery fire positions in possible preparation for attack. Yonhap cited no source for the information.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it couldn't confirm the report but said its troops have been placed on a high alert to cope with any potential North Korean aggression.

Dozens of activists, mostly North Korean defectors, planned to send about 200,000 leaflets critical of North Korea's young leader Kim Jong Un and his country's nuclear weapons program.

Lead activist Park Sang-hak said the entry ban is tantamount to yielding to Pyongyang's threat and his group will try to find another place to float leaflets. "It's surrender. It's clearly surrender," he said.

Ties between the rival Koreas were badly strained after two deadly attacks blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in 2010.

The Korean Peninsula officially remains at war because an armed conflict in the 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

Monday, October 22, 2012

The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain ? rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF ? a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left ? again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

? Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur both earned three-set victories on Saturday to reach the final of the Kremlin Cup.

Wozniacki advanced to her third final of the season by beating Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, while Stosur rallied past former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Stosur has a 3-2 record against Wozniacki, winning their last two matches.

In a match with 18 breaks of serve, the third-seeded Wozniacki won five consecutive games against Arvidsson to take the first set. Both players then struggled with their serves for the rest of the match.

The 11th-ranked Dane was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set but was broken. Wozniacki was broken again while serving for the match at 5-3 in the third but finally clinched the victory when the 46th-ranked Swede netted a backhand in the 10th game.

"I was really fighting out there," Wozniacki said. "It's tough on this surface to finish off the point. This surface suits her game much more than mine and she could get lots of balls. Besides, she was playing really good this week. I'm just happy to make it to the final."

Ivanovic won four consecutive games in the first set but Stosur broke in the eighth game of the second to stay in the match. She then made a decisive break in the seventh game of the decider and sealed the victory on her first match point with a backhand down the line.

"In the first set Ana was playing quite well making good first shots in the rally, which forced me to play in defense." Stosur said. "But in the second set I started serving a lot better and played much more accurate on return. I improved my movement and started playing more offensively and with that I managed to reverse and win the match."

Ivanovic took a medical time out at 3-2 down in the third set to have her right hip treated and bandaged. She said she first felt pain in her hip at 2-1 in the second set and "it got gradually worse and it's still sore walking."

"It's really disappointing, but it was quite a good match," Ivanovic said "I was still trying to come in and I just did two more errors here and there. I thought I still had chances in the second set. But she played well and it was a high-quality match."

Later Saturday in the men's semifinals, Malek Jaziri was scheduled to play second-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy, while Croatian veteran Ivo Karlovic was to play fourth-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.

Alt-week 20.10.12: our oldest ancestor, the birth of the moon and a planet with four stars

Most mornings, we wake up with little to no idea what happened the day before, let alone last week. Fortunately, they don't let us run important scientific research projects. Or maybe they do, and we just forgot? This week (and most others as it goes) we definitely leave it to the pros, as we get some insightful glimpses at some important origins. Ball Lightning, the moon and even us humans are the benefactors of those tireless scientists, who work hard to explain where it all comes from. There's also a planet with four stars that sees the first few paragraphs of its origin story excitedly written out. One thing we never forget, however, is that this is alt-week.

Why Storytelling is the Ultimate Weapon for Brands | Business 2 ...

Social Branding and Storytelling

In just a few short years, social media has grown intro a tremendously powerful marketing tool. However, as the old saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. The proliferation of the digital bazaar has amplified consumer voice, allowing users to directly influence the public perception of a brand.

In many cases, this is a boon to marketers, who can rely on these brand ambassadors to extoll the virtues of their favorite brands and directly influence the buying decisions of other members of their networks. As easy as it is for someone to sing the praises of a brand, consumers are perhaps even more willing to share their negative experiences with those same online communities. And, unfortunately for the brands on the receiving end, the negative messages tend to gain traction much more quickly than the positive ones.

The Power of Story

Social brands must become experts at telling their unique brand stories, and they must learn to do so in a way that is both relatable and authentic. The brands most successful at relating to their consumer base will not only gain tremendous cultural capital, they will build their cache of another invaluable stock: forgiveness.

Melinda Partin, in her Fast Company article ?Brand Storytelling: Connecting with Your Audience,? observed this important trait of brand storytelling: ?Apple has clearly done the best job in winning over the hearts and minds of users. But the company?s phones can be buggy, and they don?t do all things well. However, the form factor and user interface design, the application innovations and the philosophy of the company have created such a powerful story that people want to be a part of it.?

Cultural Capital Through Social Responsibility

To help users identify with a brand?s message, Partin adds, those brands must understand how their products can fit into their consumers? lives. Having a flashy product simply isn?t enough in today?s globally connected, socially conscious community.

Smartest Brands

As Simon Mainwaring, Founder of the social branding consultancy We First, explains, the brands most successful at telling their own stories have found a way to integrate their products and their messages with social responsibility. This approach, which Simon calls ?contributory consumption,? helps brands to align their values with those of their consumers. Such an approach is not only the right thing to do, but it will pay dividends in cultural capital down the road.

Too often, brands forget to focus on effective storytelling, and end up broadcasting their schizophrenia loud through the channels of social media and confusing their audience in the process. The smartest marketers connect with their purpose for doing business and share the story of that purpose with a consistent brand identity and effective use of the tools of the social business marketplace. One of the foremost authorities out there today on storytelling and brand identity is Simon Mainwaring, Founder of the social branding firm, We First. Simon has spent his career crafting strategic storytelling for Fortune 100 brands including Nike, Coca-Cola, Toyota and Motorola, receiving over sixty international advertising awards at the Cannes Advertising festival, US One Show and British D&AD, among others.

He?s just released a complimentary training series on social branding, and I wanted to share it with you. I think it may change the way you do business completely. Here?s a link, JUST CLICK HERE to start the series now.

NFLPA cites 1996 bounty program allowed by NFL

(AP) ? The NFL Players Association filed papers in federal court pointing out that the NFL permitted a 1996 incentive program for big hits funded by then-Green Bay defensive lineman Reggie White.

In papers filed Thursday in U.S. District Court, the union questioned why NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should now be able to suspend former Saints linebacker Scott Fujita for offering then-New Orleans teammates rewards for big plays during the 2009 season.

The filing cited media reports about White's "smash-for-cash" program that paid $500 for big plays, including big hits.

The reports, now nearly 16 years old, include players from other teams discussing similar pools climbing into the thousands of dollars. In one report by ESPN, Troy Vincent, then a defensive back with Philadelphia, discusses a similar player-funded incentive program run by Eagles players.

Vincent now works for the NFL as a vice president overseeing player engagement.

In the reports, an NFL spokesman is quoted as saying the incentive programs are permitted as long as players use their own money and the amounts players pledge are not exorbitant.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday night that the league would defer comment to its own forthcoming arguments in court.

The NFLPA seized upon the NFL's 1996 stance particularly as it related to Fujita, who Goodell suspended this for one game this season even though he said he could not verify that Fujita participated in the bounty program the league says the Saints ran for three seasons from 2009-11. Goodell said Fujita, now with Cleveland, was still guilty of violating NFL rules by offering his own incentives for big plays and also, as a team leader, by failing to try to stop to the cash-for-hits program overseen by then-Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

The union said that while the NFL's player safety goals may have evolved since 1996, it is unfair to punish players for behavior it previously permitted without formally spelling out that such behavior is no longer allowed.

"The fact that the NFL has a different agenda today than it did in 1996 cannot change the unequivocal language of the NFL Constitution & Bylaws, which has never prohibited this type of behavior," the union wrote in its legal briefs. "The Commissioner's attempt to nonetheless suspend and scapegoat Mr. Fujita for conduct - incentivizing undisputed, legitimate plays - never before punished or prohibited by the NFL not only violates the 'essence of the (collective bargaining) agreement' but further demonstrates the Commissioner's evident partiality."

Fujita is one of four players suspended by Goodell in the NFL's bounty probe of the Saints. Saints linebacker Jon Vilma wass suspended for the season, Saints defensive end Will Smith for four games and free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove for seven games. None of the suspensions are currently in effect because they all have been appealed within the framework of the NFL's labor agreement, and Goodell has set hearings for those appeals this Tuesday in New York.

However, all four players also have asked U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan to throw out Goodell's disciplinary rulings on the grounds that he has demonstrated a bias against the players in his handling the bounty investigation, thereby violating the players' industrial due process rights. The players also have questioned the credibility of the league's evidence in the case or the witnesses upon which the league's investigation relied.

The NFL has said the union agreed that the commissioner would be able to serve as the lone arbitrator for matters deemed detrimental to football and that the evidence in the case is strong enough to support Goodell's rulings.

Still, the players have argued that Goodell should be barred from handling discipline in the bounty probe and that a neutral arbitrator should be appointed, an argument repeated by the union in its latest filing.

"It is only a neutral of unquestioned integrity who can restore public confidence in this process and mitigate the damage which the NFL's handling of 'bounty-gate has inflicted upon the game," the NFLPA said.
