Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video)

Suu Kyi, in Myanmar since 1988, starts world tour

BANGKOK (AP) ? For 24 years, Aung San Suu Kyi was either under house arrest or too fearful that if she left Myanmar, the government would never let her return.

Now, in a sign of how much life there has changed, she's back to being a world traveler, catching an 85-minute flight to neighboring Thailand on Tuesday night.

With the installation of an elected government last year, and her party's own entrance into parliament this year, she can claim at least partial success for her long fight and feel a freedom to explore the world.

Suu Kyi is to spend several days in Thailand, meeting with poor migrant workers and war refugees from her homeland, as well as international movers and shakers at the the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

She'll return to Myanmar briefly and head to Europe in mid-June, with stops including Geneva and Oslo ? to formally accept the Nobel Peace Prize she won 21 years ago.

In Dublin, she'll share a stage with U2 frontman Bono, a staunch Suu Kyi supporter, at a concert in her honor, according to Irish media. In England, she has been given the rare honor of addressing both houses of Parliament. France's Foreign Ministry says she also plans to stop in Paris.

The tour marks Suu Kyi's latest step in a stunning trajectory from housewife to political prisoner to opposition leader in Parliament, as Myanmar opens to the outside world and sheds a half century of military rule. Meetings with world leaders are planned along the way as dignitaries line up to shake Suu Kyi's hand.

The last time the 66-year-old Nobel laureate flew abroad was a year before the Berlin Wall came down, in April 1988, when she traveled from London to Myanmar to nurse her dying mother.

Until then she had led an international lifestyle, growing up partly in India, where her mother was ambassador. She later attended Oxford, worked for the United Nations in New York and Bhutan and then married British academic Michael Aris and raised their two sons in England.

Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar just as an uprising erupted against the military regime. As daughter of Gen. Aung San, the country's independence hero, she was thrust into the forefront of demonstrations until the military brutally crushed the protests and locked her under house arrest in 1989.

Over the next two decades she became the world's most famous political prisoner. During intermittent periods of freedom, she declined opportunities to go abroad for fear she would not be allowed to re-enter Myanmar.

Suu Kyi's commitment to the cause came at high personal cost. In 1999, she stayed in Myanmar even as her husband was dying of cancer in England. They last saw each other in 1995, after which the junta denied Aris a visa.

After her release from house arrest in November 2010, Suu Kyi had an emotional reunion with her younger son, Kim Aris, when the junta gave him a visa after a decade-long separation.

The English leg of Suu Kyi's trip is bound to include some family time. She will celebrate her 67th birthday on June 19 while in England, where Kim lives.

Suu Kyi's aides have offered few details about her trip aside from the destinations, saying only that she will pack medicine for motion sickness.

"She gets airsick and seasick very easily. She will have to take her pills to prevent airsickness," said Win Htein, a senior official from her National League for Democracy party. He said she was typically stoic ahead of her travels: "She doesn't look too excited about it."

Thailand was not part of the original itinerary but Suu Kyi decided last week to attend the economic forum. She has a Friday speaking slot that is bound to be the event's main attraction.

Suu Kyi's appearance at the conference had threatened to upstage that of Myanmar President Thein Sein, but he canceled over the weekend citing "urgent matters" at home, said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi. He rescheduled his first official visit to Thailand for next week.

Thein Sein took power last year from the military junta following elections that were deemed unfair by international observers. Since then he has surprised much of the world by engineering sweeping reforms, though military leaders still have great control over the country.

Since Suu Kyi's release, many international dignitaries have visited her in Myanmar, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in December and British Prime Minister David Cameron in April. Cameron suggested she visit her "beloved Oxford" in June.

Suu Kyi replied at the time: "Two years ago I would have said 'Thank you for the invitation, but sorry.' But now I am able to say 'Perhaps,' and that's great progress."

JISH, Israel (AP) ? Two villages in the Holy Land's tiny Christian community are teaching Aramaic in an ambitious effort to revive the language that Jesus spoke, centuries after it all but disappeared from the Middle East.

The new focus on the region's dominant language 2,000 years ago comes with a little help from modern technology: an Aramaic-speaking television channel from Sweden, of all places, where a vibrant immigrant community has kept the ancient tongue alive.

In the Palestinian village of Beit Jala, an older generation of Aramaic speakers is trying to share the language with their grandchildren. Beit Jala lies next to Bethlehem, where the New Testament says Jesus was born.

And in the Arab-Israeli village of Jish, nestled in the Galilean hills where Jesus lived and preached, elementary school children are now being instructed in Aramaic. The children belong mostly to the Maronite Christian community. Maronites still chant their liturgy in Aramaic but few understand the prayers.

"We want to speak the language that Jesus spoke," said Carla Hadad, a 10-year-old Jish girl who frequently waved her arms to answer questions in Aramaic from school teacher Mona Issa during a recent lesson.

"We used to speak it a long time ago," she added, referring to her ancestors.

During the lesson, a dozen children lisped out a Christian prayer in Aramaic. They learned the words for "elephant," ''how are you?" and "mountain." Some children carefully drew sharp-angled Aramaic letters. Others fiddled with their pencil cases, which sported images of popular soccer teams.

The dialect taught in Jish and Beit Jala is "Syriac," which was spoken by their Christian forefathers and resembles the Galilean dialect that Jesus would have used, according to Steven Fassberg, an Aramaic expert at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

"They probably would have understood each other," Fassberg said.

In Jish, about 80 children in grades one through five study Aramaic as a voluntary subject for two hours a week. Israel's education ministry provided funds to add classes until the eighth grade, said principal Reem Khatieb-Zuabi.

Several Jish residents lobbied for Aramaic studies several years ago, said Khatieb-Zuabi, but the idea faced resistance: Jish's Muslims worried it was a covert attempt to entice their children to Christianity. Some Christians objected, saying the emphasis on their ancestral language was being used to strip them of their Arab identity. The issue is sensitive to many Arab Muslims and Christians in Israel, who prefer to be identified by their ethnicity, not their faith.

Ultimately, Khatieb-Zuabi, a secular Muslim from an outside village, overruled them.

"This is our collective heritage and culture. We should celebrate and study it," the principal said. And so the Jish Elementary School become the only Israeli public school teaching Aramaic, according to the education ministry.

Their efforts are mirrored in Beit Jala's Mar Afram school run by the Syrian Orthodox church and located just a few miles (kilometers) from Bethlehem's Manger Square.

There, priests have taught the language to their 320 students for the past five years.

Some 360 families in the area descend from Aramaic-speaking refugees who in the 1920s fled the Tur Abdin region of what is now Turkey.

Priest Butros Nimeh said elders still speak the language but that it vanished among younger generations. Nimeh said they hoped teaching the language would help the children appreciate their roots.

Although both the Syrian Orthodox and Maronite church worship in Aramaic, they are distinctly different sects.

The Maronites are the dominant Christian church in neighboring Lebanon but make up only a few thousand of the Holy Land's 210,000 Christians. Likewise, Syrian Orthodox Christians number no more than 2,000 in the Holy Land, said Nimeh. Overall, some 150,000 Christians live in Israel and another 60,000 live in the West Bank.

Both schools found inspiration and assistance in an unlikely place: Sweden. There, Aramaic-speaking communities who descended from the Middle East have sought to keep their language alive.

They publish a newspaper, "Bahro Suryoyo," pamphlets and children's books, including "The Little Prince," and maintain a satellite television station, "Soryoyosat," said Arzu Alan, chairwoman of the Syriac Aramaic Federation of Sweden.

There's also an Aramaic soccer team, "Syrianska FC" in the Swedish top division from the town of Sodertalje. Officials estimate the Aramaic-speaking population at anywhere from 30,000 to 80,000 people.

For many Maronites and Syrian Orthodox Christians in the Holy Land, the television station, in particular, was the first time they heard the language outside church in decades. Hearing it in a modern context inspired them to try revive the language among their communities.

"When you hear (the language), you can speak it," said Issa, the teacher.

Aramaic dialects were the region's vernacular from 2,500 years ago until the sixth century, when Arabic, the language of conquering Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula, became dominant, according to Fassberg.

Linguistic islands survived: Maronites clung to Aramaic liturgy and so did the Syrian Orthodox church. Kurdish Jews on the river island of Zakho spoke an Aramaic dialect called "Targum" until fleeing to Israel in the 1950s. Three Christian villages in Syria still speak an Aramaic dialect, Fassberg said.

With few opportunities to practice the ancient tongue, teachers in Jish have tempered expectations. They hope they can at least revive an understanding of the language.

The steep challenges are seen in the Jish school, where the fourth-grade Aramaic class has just a dozen students. The number used to be twice that until they introduced an art class during the same time slot ? and lost half their students.

Pregnancy has not exactly been good to me, except for the fact that we finally get a sweet baby out of this whole ordeal, and I get discounts on food sometimes and people are extra nice to me. Okay, so there are pros and cons to being pregnant.

The strangest part about being pregnant right now is also scary. Every time the baby moves weird or I feel weird, I think the baby is coming. I'm 33 weeks tomorrow and scared that since I have no idea what labor feels like, I'll miss my opportunity to go to the hospital and have the baby. He needs to cook longer than 33 weeks, and I have no real reason to think he'll come sooner than he should, but you really never know with these things.

When I hit 30 weeks, I had a tiny scare on the day of my baby shower. 30 minutes before I was supposed to arrive, I called my doctors office to let them know I'd been having weird cramps in my abdomen all day. They told me to go straight to the hospital to be checked for preterm labor. I didn't expect that, so I called Tim and tried not to cry through my explanation of why there'd been a change of plans and I needed him to meet me at the hospital pronto, and to please tell his mom I'm sorry I'll be a little late to the shower she and my sister-in-laws had planned for me.

I did cry through it, but I felt a little better once I got to the hospital and there was a parking space at the front for expectant mothers. I'd been waiting to park in one of those spots since I heard they existed. Tiny victory.

Once inside, they had me pee in a cup and fixed me up with some moniters on my belly. When the nurse saw my urine cup, she exclaimed, "Whoa! I think I know what's wrong..." Turns out it was a bladder infection. That's right, my urine was that dark. An hour later, the test results confirmed it. She said most women who go into preterm labor do so because they have untreated bladder infections, so it was a good thing I listened to my body and came in.

I agreed until I had to go to my baby shower. Everyone was very sweet and it was a beautiful party, but my emotions were running a little high to be in front of a crowd, even a crowd of my friends and family. All I wanted to do was go home, have a family snuggle on the bed and cry tears of relief with my hubby and puppy that the baby was still doing just fine.

Then I started to get up and walk around to visit with everyone. Some people there had been in my life for so long, I knew their faces just as well as my own in the mirror. Some I'd befriended recently in my new ward and already felt a strong connection with. Talking with them was all it took to get the hospital out of my mind.

The best part about my baby shower was the theme chosen. Everyone was to bring their favorite childhood books to increase our baby book library (which previously consisted of about 5 books). Our baby was given great classics like Chica Chica Boom Boom and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear Brown Bear, What do you See?, fairy tale compelations, Don't Let the Pidgeon books, and some books I'd never heard of but knew our baby would love! It was such a sweet and wonderful idea.

In some cases, it doesn't do to dwell on things, but it's best to move on. I am definitely a dweller and that was probably the first time I was able to move past something so quickly. I'm very grateful I was able to learn that. Hmmm....maybe I shouldn't say I've moved past it if I'm blogging about it. But it happened, right? I'm documenting my pregnancy here.

Besides, now I kinda know where my fears began. But I still have no idea what labor feels like. Dun dun duunnnnnnnnnnnn.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Former Penn State University president Graham Spanier has filed a civil lawsuit to force the school to release emails related to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The lawsuit was filed late Friday in Centre County court and concerns an internal investigation, led by ex-FBI chief Louis Freeh, that Penn State is conducting about the scandal. It was first reported by the Centre Daily Times newspaper on its website.

Spanier isn't asking for money in the lawsuit, which claims that he first was told Penn State emails from before 2004 didn't exist and that he recently learned at least some of those emails have been retrieved but the school refuses to allow him to see them.

Spanier's lawyers claim that Penn State attorneys were willing to send copies of the emails but allege the attorney general's office asked the school not to do so. The lawsuit seeks to have a court force the school to give copies of the emails to Spanier so he can be better prepared to testify for the internal investigation.

Spanier also claims in the lawsuit that he offered to resign on Nov. 9 and trustees accepted that offer. Previous reports have said that he was fired or resigned under pressure.

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said Friday the school may not have a copy of the lawsuit and didn't immediately respond to questions.

Spanier's presidency ended four days after Sandusky was charged with dozens of sexual assault counts. Eight of 10 boys Sandusky is accused of abusing were attacked on campus, prosecutors allege. A former Penn State graduate assistant said he saw Sandusky in the football team shower with a boy a decade ago.

Sandusky has maintained his innocence, acknowledging he showered with boys but saying he never molested them. His wife, Dottie Sandusky, has said he is innocent and his accusers are making up their stories.

Guidlines:

Fluids -?replace 24 oz for every pound lost during event. Including sodium in the recovery plan is beneficial.
Carbohydrates -?.5 grams per pound of body weight within 30 minutes.
Protein -?Aim for 10-20 grams of protein within 30 minutes.
