Africa minister: No UK troops to fight in Mali

British troops will not be deployed alongside French forces fighting rebels with links to al Qaida who are attempting to overthrow Mali's government, said Foreign Office minister Mark Simmonds.

He told MPs the French intervened as a result of a direct request from the Mali government.

He added Prime Minister David Cameron agreed to provide logistical support following a direct request to Britain from France's President Hollande at the weekend.

Mr Simmonds also confirmed Britain's current logistical role would be limited to one week.

The UK have sent two C-17 transport planes to assist the French in Mali and RAF ground crew may be stationed on the ground in the west African country briefly to service the aircraft.
