Microsoft to Apple: We're coming for you now

Microsoft has learned (the hard way) that it cannot sit idly by anymore hoping its partners such as Dell and Hewlett Packard will develop effective hardware. Microsoft now seems ready to become more proactive in its bid to compete with Apple.

By Joshua M. Brown,?Guest blogger / July 2, 2012

Vicki Bauer, of Lenexa, Kan., watched over her grandchildren as they napped before the opening of the first Microsoft Store in the Kansas City area in this June 2012 file photo. Microsoft has begun an aggressive push to develop hardware that can seriously compete with Apple and Google.

The most interesting tech story happening beneath the surface - to me anyway - is about how Microsoft has essentially given up on its hardware partners and has decided to be more proactive in the war on Apple.

Redmond, Washington has awoken and the furnaces have been jerked into life, steam and smoke appear above the forest's treeline.? And it's a good thing, because it's getting past the point where it will matter anymore.

Microsoft has learned (the hard way) that it cannot sit idly by anymore hoping Dell and Hewlett Packard (and to a less extent Nokia) will come up with the hardware that will showcase its software admirably enough to get some traction in what the PC guys call "alternative devices."? Anyone not living in a secret terrorist compound in Northeastern Pakistan knows that there is nothing "alternative" about tablets - they are replacing PCs, plain and simple, and Microsoft increasingly finds itself as the king of operating systems for yesterday's device.

So how far with Microsoft go on the hardware side?? I think pretty far.? They certainly have the capital and the relationships and the gumption (historically, anyway) to really go for it.? But what does that mean for their partners at Dell at HP?? Are they now competitors?

Here's Tiernan Rey writing for Barron's Tech Trader last week:

Microsoft did little to tame speculation about competition. CEO Steve Ballmer, presenting the Surface on stage, talked out of both sides of his mouth.

He said Microsoft remains committed to its hardware partners. But he also took a page from the late Apple (AAPL) founder, Steve Jobs, declaring that people's interactions with machines are better when "all aspects of the experience?hardware and software?are considered in working together." That's a major shift from Microsoft's classic approach of selling Windows as the software engine anyone can license to make a great machine.

A person close to Microsoft tells me competition may be more limited than it appears. Microsoft wants to push the entire Windows "ecosystem" forward, the person tells me, to prompt hardware partners to design better machines.

Sure, for now. Rick Sherlund, who follows Microsoft for Nomura Equity Research, believes competition between Microsoft, HP and Dell will prove all too real, because "we are in a new world," as he puts it. Microsoft, he told me last week, cannot afford to leave its battle against Apple's iPad to the fumbling of the PC makers.

Will Microsoft's ambitious entry into hardware mean a competition-driven renaissance for the box-makers they used to rely on? That would certainly be the optimistic case and perhaps the thing Apple (and Google) would fear most. Or does it simply mean a more brutal environment for gadget and device makers in general?

One other thing I came across that lends credence to the latter view - here's Ina Fried on a pretty noticeable departure at MSFT in All Things D:

The head of Microsoft?s unit responsible for interactions with PC makers is shifting jobs.

Steve Guggenheimer, a longtime Microsoft veteran, will move to a new, unspecified role at the company. Bloomberg quotes a Microsoft spokesman as saying that Guggenheimer would take a sabbatical before taking on the new role.

The move comes just days after Microsoft introduced the Surface tablet, its first effort to compete with its computer-maker partners in the market for Windows computers. A version of the Surface running chips from Nvidia is due to ship around the same time that computer makers release their own Windows 8 machines.

Computer makers are said to have been given only a very limited heads-up on what Microsoft was planning, and sources say many companies are unhappy to find themselves competing against their software provider in the tablet market ? one they had hoped would provide a new growth opportunity.

My conclusion is that this kind of thing makes HPQ, DELL, NOK and anyone else making hardware "for" Mister Softee an uninvestable company.? Ballmer's grown impatient with his partners and there's no telling what the company's product roadmap may actually mean going forward.

NATO says 3 service members killed in Afghanistan

(AP) ? A man in an Afghan police uniform on Sunday shot and killed three foreign troops in southern Afghanistan, the U.S.-led coalition said in a statement.

It did not give any other details, including the nationalities of the three. The statement said the man was wearing the uniform of the Afghan National Civil Order Police and that the incident was under investigation.

Their deaths bring to 218 the number of foreign troops killed so far this year.

Earlier, Afghan police said a roadside bomb killed five civilians in the eastern province of Ghazni.

Deputy provincial police chief Maj. Mohammad Hussain said a bus full of people struck the explosives Sunday morning while driving near Ghazni city, capital of the province of the same name.

He said another 11 people were wounded, and the dead included women and children. The bus was traveling from Kabul to the southern city of Kandahar.

Education in sex and personal relationships | discussion about sex ...

sex educationSex education is that process of acquiring knowledge and developing
beliefs and attitudes related to sex, intimacy and sexual identity to enable young people confidently make wise decisions about their behaviours.

What are the main aims?

Effective education in sex and relationships strives to

  • minimise risks of negative results from sexual behaviours. These risks include unplanned or unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections like HIV/AIDs.
  • increase positive experience and quality of young people?s relationships by boosting their capabilities to make informed choices.

Skills to be developed.

For sex education to be effective,it must incorporate life-skills to be developed and applied in sexual relationships.Important skills to be learned include ability to negotiate, communicate, make decisions and effective listening.Additionally, ability to identify and resist pressures from others, dealing with prejudice and seeeking assistance from adults are other key skills to be included.
Young people must also be able to recognize accurate information and discuss a variety of moral and social perspectives on sex and relationships.

When should education in sex and personal relationship start?

Effective sex aducation begins before an individual reaches puberty and before he or she has developed established behaviour styles. The physical, intellectual and emotional developments of a young person should be considered to determine the exact age of acquiring sexual informations.Providing young individuals basic information from an early age is important since it lays a foundation on which complex information is built as time goes.

Does sex education at an early age encourage young individuals to engage in sex?

Most folks fear that giving sexual information can arouse curiosity to experiment in sexual activities. However, evidences from extensive studies have revealed that sex educations did not heighten sexual activities. It was reported that there was reduced sex or increased use of condoms and other contraceptives.

When should parents engage their young people on sexual talks?

It can sometimes prove to be difficult for parents to know the right time of raising the issue. However,it is important to have an open relationship with your children to enable them ask itching questions concerning sexuality. It is the role of parents and carers to engage young individuals in sexuality and relationships discussions.Although it is natural for adults and their young ones to feel embarrassed to have sexual talks, you need to take sex education as a progressive talk about attitudes, values and giving helpful facts.

As children progresses in age,the role of many parents change. The young people are now exposed to more opportunities to acquire formal sex education in their schools and other community apparatus. However, these programs are done in blocks of time at school. Therefore, they cannot deal with sexual issues relevant to the young individuals at a given time.Parents still have a role of giving information and opportunities to address issues as they crop up.

What information need to be given?

Young individuals acquire information from a vast range of sources including the media like websites, adverts, magazines and books. Some of these information may be misleading while others are accurate.Sex education should add to the information these young people have collected and correcting any inaccurate sexual information.

Topics to be covered should include

  • sexual development
  • reproduction
  • birth control measures
  • personal relationships

Chimps attack American student in a South Africa sanctuary

JOHANNESBURG???Chimpanzees at a sanctuary founded by famed primatologist Jane Goodall pulled a Texas graduate student into their fenced-off enclosure, dragging him nearly a half-mile and biting off parts of his ear and hands.

Andrew F. Oberle was giving a lecture to a group of tourists at the Chimp Eden sanctuary Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, said Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 emergency services company. The 26-year-old anthropology student was in critical condition Friday after undergoing surgery, hospital officials said.

Oberle had crossed the first of two fences separating the chimpanzees from visitors and was standing close to the second fence, which is electrified, at the time of the attack, said Edwin Jay, chairman of the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa. The chimps were placed in their night enclosure pending an investigation. The Associated Press

Rodney King called 'symbol of forgiveness'

By Jason Kandel, Melissa Pamer and Ted Chen, NBCLosAngeles.com

Rodney King was remembered during a Saturday service at Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills as a "symbol of forgiveness" who bore the scars of his infamous beating with dignity.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered the eulogy, said at a news conference before the funeral that King never showed bitterness to the officers who beat him.

"People should not be judged by the mistakes that they make, but by how they rise above them," Sharpton said. "Rodney had risen above his mistakes, he never mocked anyone, not the police, not the justice system, not anyone."

Sharpton added that King had become a "symbol of forgiveness."

King was found in the bottom of his swimming pool in the backyard of his Rialto home on June 17. His death at age 47 is being treated as an accidental drowning, though autopsy results have still not been released.

Family members held a private service early Saturday, followed by a public memorial and burial.

"I will remember his smile, his unconditional love," said daughter Laura Dene King, 28, to a phalanx of news cameras outside the Hall of Freedom at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills. "He was a great father, a great friend; he loved everyone. People will just have to smile when they think of him."

Donors who had contributed to the funeral and other arrangements included TV producer Anthony Zuiker, who donated $10,000.

Rodney Glen King, the man who was at the center of a national debate on civil rights after he was brutally beaten by LAPD in 1991 is dead at the age of 47.

"We lost a symbol, but they lost a loved one," said Zuiker, creator of the CSI: series. "Rodney was a healer."

King became famous after his videotaped Lake View Terrace beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 was broadcast worldwide, as were photos of his bloodied and bruised face.

Those images became a national symbol of police brutality.

"That showed what was evident all over the United States, that police brutality was alive and well," observed Lawrence Tolliver, the owner of well-known barber shop in South LA.

When four officers charged with felony assault on King were acquitted by a jury with no black members, the verdict sparked a riot that lasted for six days and brought U.S. military presence to patrol LA streets.

During the unrest, which left more than 50 people dead and caused more than $1 billion in property damage, King famously pleaded for peace by asking, "Can we all get along?"

King's words were embroidered on the lid of his casket, next to a portrait of him.
