beliefs and attitudes related to sex,intimacy and sexual identity to enable young people confidently make wise decisions about their behaviours.

What are the main aims?

Effective education in sex and relationships strives to

  • minimise risks of negative results from sexual behaviours.These risks include unplanned or unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections like HIV/AIDs.
  • increase positive experience and quality of young people?s relationships by boosting their capabilities to make informed choices.

Skills to be developed.

For sex education to be effective,it must incorporate life-skills to be developed and applied in sexual relationships.Important skills to be learned include ability to negotiate,communicate,make decisions and effective listening.Additionally,ability to identify and resist pressures from others,dealing with prejudice and seeeking assistance from adults are other key skills to be included.
Young people must also be able to recognize accurate information and discuss a variety of moral and social perspectives on sex and relationships.

When should education in sex and personal relationship start?

Effective sex aducation begins before an individual reaches puberty and before he or she has developed established behaviour styles.The physical,intellectual and emotional developments of a young person should be considered to determine the exact age of acquiring sexual informations.Providing young individuals basic information from an early age is important since it lays a foundation on which complex information is built as time goes.

Does sex education at an early age encourage young individuals to engage in sex?

Most folks fear that giving sexual information can arouse curiosity to experiment in sexual activities.However,evidences from extensive studies have revealed that sex educations did not heighten sexual activities.It was reported that there was reduced sex or increased use of condoms and other contraceptives.

When should parents engage their young people on sexual talks?

It can sometimes prove to be difficult for parents to know the right time of raising the issue.However,it is important to have an open relationship with your children to enable them ask itching questions concerning sexuality.It is the role of parents and carers to engage young individuals in sexuality and relationships discussions.Although it is natural for adults and their young ones to feel embarrassed to have sexual talks,you need to take sex education as a progressive talk about attitudes,values and giving helpful facts.

As children progresses in age,the role of many parents change.The young people are now exposed to more opportunities to acquire formal sex education in their schools and other community apparatus.However,these programs are done in blocks of time at school.Therefore,they cannot deal with sexual issues relevant to the young individuals at a given time.Parents still have a role of giving information and opportunities to address issues as they crop up.

Young individuals acquire information from a vast range of sources including the media like websites,adverts,magazines and books.Some of these information may be misleading while others are accurate.Sex education should add to the information these young people have collected and correcting any inaccurate sexual information.
