Nationwide strike begins in Nigeria over gas costs (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? A nationwide strike in Nigeria called over fuel prices has begun.

As the sun rose Monday in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos, typically clogged roads were empty as trade unions set up informal roadblocks. Local gang members beat cars with fists and broke the windows of some cars that were still on the street.

Hundreds of protesters have gathered in the city ahead of a planned mass demonstration.

Gas prices have risen from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter) since the subsidy on fuel ended Jan. 1 at the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan's administration. Lawmakers on Sunday rebuked the decision to end the subsidy. Unions said they would proceed with the strike.
