'Gremlins' Reboot Potentially In The Works

Everything old becomes new again, and website Vulture is reporting that a reboot of Joe Dante's beloved 1980's horror comedy "Gremlins" is potentially in the works. It's time to start memorizing those three very important rules: no water, no bright lights, and don't feed your Mogwai after midnight. Apparently Warner Bros. Pictures is chatting with [...]

(AP) ? The Jacksonville Jaguars have an energetic head coach to go along with their brash general manager.

The Jaguars hired Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley as the franchise's fifth head coach Thursday, the latest move in the team's rebuilding project.

The 46-year-old Bradley joins general manager Dave Caldwell, who led the coaching search after being hired last week.

"It was just a matter of time before Gus Bradley became a head coach in the NFL, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are extremely fortunate that Gus will be on our sidelines for many years to come," Caldwell said in a statement. "Gus more than met every criteria we insisted on from our new head coach, and his intangibles and leadership abilities are exceptional. Gus is who the Jaguars need now and in the future."

Bradley spent the last four seasons in Seattle, earning a reputation as a fiery assistant who demanded ? and often got ? the most from his players. His defense improved each of the last three years and finished in the top 10 in points and yards the last two. This season, the Seahawks ranked first in points allowed (15.3), fourth in yards (306.2) and tied for fourth in takeaways (31).

The Jaguars were 30th in the league in total defense in 2012.

Owner "Shad Khan and Dave Caldwell expect to win, and that's what I wanted to hear," Bradley said. "That's why I am coming to Jacksonville ? to win a Super Bowl."

Bradley will be introduced at a news conference Friday.

His liveliness seems to be a good fit with Caldwell, who oozed confidence during his introduction last week. Caldwell pointed to his "track record of success," adding that he has "never been a part of a losing team." He also openly shot down any chance of bringing in New York Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow, a bold move in Tebow's hometown.

Caldwell came across like the polar opposite of former general manager Gene Smith, who showed little emotion in his four years at the helm.

Bradley probably will look equally outgoing compared to former coach Mike Mularkey, who was known for taking a calm and consistent approach to everything ? including losing.

Bradley began his NFL coaching career with Tampa Bay as a defensive quality control coach in 2006. He was the Buccaneers' linebackers coach the next two seasons before going to Seattle. Bradley coached in college from 1990-2005, including two stints at his alma mater, North Dakota State, and four years at Fort Lewis College (1992-95).

But his rise through the NFL ranks had him on several teams' radar. He also interviewed for the head job in Philadelphia this week.

"He's got a brilliant football mind," Seahawks coach Peter Carroll said this week. "He's got a way of reaching people and touching people and getting the best out of them, coaches and players alike. He's got everything that you're looking for."

The Jaguars interviewed defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden before striking a deal with Bradley.

Bradley replaces Mularkey, who went 2-14 in his only season in Jacksonville. Mularkey failed to make the team any better in his first season.

Khan fired Smith, the architect of the roster since 2009, and charged Caldwell with turning around one of the league's worst franchises. Caldwell's first move was ousting Mularkey, saying the team "needed a fresh start."

Many believed Caldwell would target close friend and college roommate Greg Roman, San Francisco's offensive coordinator.

Instead, Caldwell and Bradley will team up in hope of getting the Jaguars back to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Jacksonville has missed the postseason 11 times in the last 13 years.

"The relationship between the general manager and the coach is vital," Khan said last week. "It has to be a symbiotic relationship and they have to grow together and the coach has to be somebody that it's very, very important to win and very, very important for Jacksonville."

Bradley inherits a team that lacks playmakers on both sides of the ball.

The Jaguars have running back Maurice Jones-Drew under contract for another year and have young and talented receivers Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts III. But the offensive line was a mess in 2012, adding to the team's quarterback woes.

Neither Blaine Gabbert nor Chad Henne proved to be the answer.

Caldwell said he had "others in mind" to compete for the starting job.

Defensively, the Jaguars could lose linebacker Daryl Smith, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton and cornerbacks Derek Cox and Rashean Mathis to free agency. The more pressing issue will be how to generate more consistent pass rush.

The Jaguars had a league-low 20 sacks this season. Philadelphia Eagles cast-off Jason Babin helped down the stretch, but the Jaguars are likely to use the No. 2 pick in April's NFL draft to find a pass rusher.

Bradley helped develop defensive end Bruce Irvin this season. Irvin, the 15th overall pick, led all rookies with eight sacks. His defense had other young stars, too.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner, a second-round draft pick, ranked second among rookies in tackles with 140 and fourth with three interceptions. Safety Earl Thomas was voted to his second consecutive Pro Bowl, second-year cornerback Richard Sherman led the team with eight interceptions and defensive end Chris Clemons had a career-high 11 ? sacks.

Zuckerberg: Microsoft more willing to work with us, still open to a Google partnership

Zuckerberg Microsoft more willing to work with us, still open to a Google partnership

Facebook's "one more thing" at today's Graph Search press conference? A search partnership with Bing. Naturally, Google was the elephant in the room after such an announcement, particularly in light of the fact that Lars Rasmussen has strong ties to the company by way of his connection to Maps and Wave. Asked why he opted not to take his business to Mountain View, Zuck told the crowd,

The main thing is that when people share something on Facebook, we want to give them the ability to broadcast things, but also retract them later, and have them be removed immediately. Microsoft was more willing to do things specific to Facebook.

We've reach out to Google to get its side of the story. We'll let you know what we hear.

Fast Food Linked to Increased Allergies and Asthma in Kids and ...

Not that you need yet another reason to shun fast food, but in case you do, a new study shows that fast food is linked to a higher risk of kids and teens developing asthma, eczema and rhinitis. The new research, phase three of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood, published in the medical journal?Thorax, explores the connection between what kids eat and their health. What researchers found out during this phase of the study is that kids who eat fast food more than three times a week were more likely to experience severe asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema. In good news, researchers also note that children and adolescents who eat fruit more than three times a week experience a unique protective factor that may lower symptoms related to severe asthma. It?s no big secret that kids should not be eating fast food three times a week or more. In fact, honestly, it?s a bad idea to serve your kids fast food at all as fast food meals are loaded with fat and calories. On top of that, fast food wrappers are linked to BPA and other chemical exposure and fast food has been linked to compulsive eating and addiction that mimics drug use. Plus, as most parents are well aware, this country is facing a childhood?obesity?epidemic?unlike any that?s been seen before, and it?s no wonder. We?ve got Ronald McDonald teaching kids about nutrition, kids getting less and less physical activity?and?child food portion sizes are?spiraling?out of control. ?The above said, do your kids a favor and say no to fast food.

How hot was 2012? Hottest on record in US, by a long shot (+video)

Global warming 'has had a role' in making 2012 the hottest ever recorded in the lower 48 states, says a US climatologist. The average temperature was 54.3 degrees F., a full degree higher than the previous annual record.

The year 2012 was the warmest on record for the continental United States, eclipsing 1998's record average temperature of 54.3 degrees by a full degree Fahrenheit.

While one degree's difference may not seem like much, the spread between the record coldest year, 1917, and the previous record warm year, 1998, is just 4.2 degrees F. With 2012's record-high reading, the gap has grown by 25 percent, according to preliminary data from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, N.C.

Last year marked the 15th consecutive year of above-normal average annual temperatures for the continental US.

Global warming "has had a role in this," says Jake Crouch, a climatologist at the NCDC, during a briefing Tuesday on the year's data. Annual average temperatures for the lower 48 states have been increasing over the past century, although he noted that it's difficult to know how much of the warming in 2012 could be pegged to human-induced climate change versus natural variability.

Regionally, the Northeast, Southwest, South, and North West Central US posted record high annual temperatures, with the North West Central US coming in at 3.9 degrees F. above the long-term average, followed by the Northeast at 3.4 degrees F. above the long-term average.

Beyond temperatures, the continental US posted the second worst year, after 1998, for severe weather, as measured by the NCDC's US Climate Extremes Index.

The most pervasive severe conditions in 2012 centered on the ongoing drought in the US. At one point in July, moderate to exceptional drought, as measured by a gauge known as the Palmer Drought Severity index, covered 61 percent of the US. Other measures still put the drought coverage at 61 percent of the country, covering most of the western two-thirds of the US.

Toward the end of last year, a dearth of water flowing into the Mississippi River threatened to shut down barge traffic along a key section between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill. But the US Army Corps of Engineers released water from the Carlyle Lake Reservoir in Illinois, which fed water into the river. The Army Corps also used explosives to pulverize rocks on the river bottom that had become threats to navigation as the water level fell. These two actions, Corps officials say, are expected to keep the Mississippi open to barge traffic through the end of January.

Champion Djokovic charms Australian Open crowd

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Novak Djokovic had a big, adoring crowd at Rod Laver Arena, and he knew exactly how to work it.

Writing "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" on a live TV camera lens with a felt-tip pen was the perfect way to sign off after his 15th consecutive win at the Australian Open.

Having the confidence to charm a crowd of thousands comes with experience ? he has won the last two Australian titles and is aiming to be the first man in the Open era to win three in succession.

"Hello, everybody, it's great to be back," he said after his 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 win over Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, his first match at Melbourne Park since his epic five-set win over Rafael Nadal in last year's final. "I have great memories. ... Twelve months ago, played a six-hour final. Thanks for coming and supporting me."

David Ferrer, who took the No. 4 seeding when fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal withdrew because of illness and injury, had only a couple of hundred people watching in cavernous Hisense Arena on Day One at Melbourne Park. He opened with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Olivier Rochus of Belgium.

Ferrer knows that without his compatriot in the draw, there's a semifinal spot up for grabs, but he's content to stay under the radar.

"Of course, Novak, Roger and Rafael and Murray ? they've won Grand Slams. It's very difficult for (another) player to win the first Grand Slam of his career. For me, I am trying to do my best."

The four majors in 2012 were shared by Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, the Scotsman who finally ended the 76-year drought for British men at the Grand Slam events by winning the U.S. Open. With Nadal out, the so called 'Big 4' has become the 'Big 3,' with nobody else in the top 10 given a realistic chance of winning.

Djokovic doesn't have another Grand Slam winner in his half of the draw after his Serbian Davis Cup teammate Janko Tipsarevic ousted Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt, a former U.S. Open and Wimbledon winner, in a night match.

"If you want my opinion, it's that the top four, they are better," Ferrer said. "The last years, they were in all the semifinals and finals."

Federer, who has four Australian titles among his 17 majors, and Murray, who broke his Grand Slam drought by winning the U.S. Open, have their first-round matches Tuesday in what shapes as a blockbuster day session at Rod Laver Arena.

Murray is against Robin Haase in the first match and Federer is against Benoit Paire of France in the third ? women's champion Victoria Azarenka takes in Monica Niculescu of Romania in between.

Congestion on center court means Serena Williams, the big favorite to win the women's title, will play her first-round match at Hisense Arena against Romania's Edina Gallovits-Hall, who is ranked No. 110.

Williams had a good look at the setting Monday, sitting in the stands with her coach Patrick Mouratoglou to watch older sister Venus win her opening match.

Serena, who is ranked No. 3 and has won 35 of her last 36 matches including titles at Wimbledon, the Olympics and the U.S. Open, had left long before Ferrer was to play the third match at Hisense.

The 30-year-old Spaniard drew polite applause rather than raucous cheering from the small crowd in a match punctuated by long periods of silence.

The second of the main courts at Melbourne Park can be eerily quiet when empty. It didn't bother Ferrer that there was only a smattering of fans and red-and-yellow Spanish flags.

Ferrer is a four-time Grand Slam semifinalist. He's a practical technician who became a multimillionaire through tennis. But he's clearly no Nadal, who can rage like a bull on court.

"Rafael is more important because he is the best of the history of Spanish players," Ferrer said. "Rafael is very important for the tour and for everybody. Anyway, he's a ... very good friend for me. Of course, we miss him. Not just me, everybody."

Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych reached the 2010 Wimbledon final and beat Federer in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open before losing to Murray.

He beat American Michael Russell 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 in his opening match Monday, and was content to let the top three men have all the attention.

"I would say it's maybe even better for myself," he said. "I mean, let's leave all the pressure on them. You know, everybody's talking how many Grand Slams this guy can win, that one."

Four American men advanced Monday, led by No. 20 Sam Querrey, the highest-ranked U.S. man in the tournament after John Isner pulled out with an injury. Querry beat Daniel Munoz-de la Nava of Spain 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Brian Baker fended off Russia's Alex Bogomolov Jr. 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-7 (0), 3-6, 6-2; Tim Smyczek beat Croatia's Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6 (5), 7-5; and Ryan Harrison's reward for beating Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 was a second-round match against Djokovic.

Among the other men's seeds advancing were No. 10 Nicolas Almagro, No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 16 Kei Nishikori and No. 22 Fernando Verdasco, a semifinalist in Australia in 2009.

No. 11 Juan Monaco of Argentina lost to Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-1.

Tipsarevic thought he had to overcome the most difficult challenge of the day. Australia's Hewitt, a two-time major winner and former No. 1, was playing his 17th consecutive Australian Open.

"Lleyton Hewitt is as tough as it gets for a first round Australian Open, first Grand Slam of the year," he said. "With all the respect to all the other guys who are potential threats, I think this is as tough as it gets, knowing that he plays really good tennis here, knowing that he won Kooyong last week," he said. "I cannot tell you how happy that I am."

The first two women's matches were over quickly, with No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova finishing off a 6-0, 6-0 win over Olga Puchkova in 55 minutes. She showed no signs of discomfort from a right collarbone injury that ruled her out of a tuneup tournament in Brisbane.

Sharapova has a potential third-round match against Venus Williams, who needed just an hour for her opening 6-1, 6-0 win over Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan.

No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 6 Li Na, No. 9 Samantha Stosur, No. 11 Marion Bartoli and No. 13 Ana Ivanovic all won in straight sets, and 17-year-old American Madison Keys joined them in the second round when she beat Casey Dellacqua of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (0).

Venus Williams missed the 2012 Australian Open. She is returning from a seven-month layoff because of Sjogren's syndrome, an illness that causes joint pain and fatigue.

"It's hard to play the first match in a major, first thing of the year, and that can be a lot of pressure," Williams said. "I did my best."
